Gwalia ghost town Kalgoorlie - Gwalia - Niagara Dam - Lake Ballard - Salmon Gum - Esperance We managed to miss the rain by heading north from Kalgoorlie, but unfortunately we couldn't avoid the wind. We visited Gwalia - a ghost town near Leonora - then went to Niagara Dam (for a picnic lunch), and then out to Lake Ballard to see the statues and spend the night at the campground.
Gwalia was excellent - you could walk through the old buildings and see the type of materials used. The story behind Niagara Dam was interesting - after it was built an underground spring was discovered nearby. The wind got stronger as the day progressed, and by the time we got to Lake Ballard it was blowing a gale. The BOM weather warning predicted wind gusts up to 100km/hr and we reckon it was pretty right. We were being sandblasted, but we went for a walk on the lake to see some of the statues (we didn't do the whole walk). I didn't sleep much that night, waiting for the camper to blow away... It finally let up in the early hours of the morning.
The next day we headed south

Gwalia ghost town again, stopping at Kalgoorlie for breakfast and then towards Esperance. We stopped overnight at Salmon Gum, a small town between Norseman and Esperance. The town has a small council run campground with a camp host who provides a campfire every night. The wind had eased off but was still blowing a bit - but we were able to find a nice spot out of the wind behind the local gun club. It was nice and quiet (except the occasional slow moving train) and I was able to catch up on my sleep.
The next day was a very short drive, about 110km, to Esperance.
