13-3-10 Saturday, Up early & packed up, Den sneaked in a quick wash of the van before anyone saw him. Once packed up we said goodbye to Tony & Cheryl & we will meet up with them at Kalgoorlie in a few days. We are spending 2 days off road & will probably go half way today. We started off into the wind (as usual) but we have to travel, take the good with the bad. I caught up with the pics & diary on the road & we stopped at Salmon Gums for a cuppa & there was a real old pub & we ordered a cappuccino & sat outside with the dogs to drink it & decide where we might stay. It was pretty hot by this time, we pushed on & decided to have a look at No 31 in the camp book, Dundas Rocks , 25 km from Norseman. It is 2 km off the road with a picnic area & BBQ”s but no toilet & no amenities. We set up camp, the only ones here, that done Den set up the satellite dish as the V8’s were on TV. It was very hot, the girls had
wet rags on them & panting. Den turned the Generator on & we put the fan on which made a big difference. The fly’s are bad, but we set up the mozzie & fly trap & we are comfy. We had a call from Kirsty when we were at Esperance & poor little Riley (11 months old) has to have his tonsils out next Thursday if the infection has cleared up, he has had 6 bouts of tonsillitis since he was born. We are having an easy avo & we will have lamb & salad for tea. It’s spooky being by ourselves, but Den has the Tyre lever by the bed. We only had one other motor home pull up in the bush. 14-3-10 Sunday We decided to explore the area as there was an old goldmine up the road & a memorial called “The Lone Grave”. We set of & explored the old gold town (not much to see) & then after a bit of looking & a lot of walking we found “The Lone Grave of a 7 month old baby buried on the point of a really big dry salt lake. We headed for the van, it
was not as hot today thank goodness. We had just got back & blow me down Tony & Cheryl drove up, they had picked the same spot to stay. After setting up & lunch & Den carving our initials in a boulder, we went for a walk around the picnic area, there were a lot of boulders to climb & a dam that the first goldminers had built. The dogs have had a ball off their leads & Tony & Cheryl also have a dog & after they sorted out who was boss, they get on famously. Den & Tony watched the V8’s & I cooked a baked dinner & we sat around a had a long happy hour, as the sun set. 15-3-10 Monday, all packed up & on the road, we got fuel at Norseman $1.12 for gas, rip off. We then stopped at Coolgardie, a lovely town with a lot of heritage buildings, took the girls for a walk, & had a drink. It must have been 37 deg. We got underway & we all booked into The Prospectors Park at Kalgoorlie for 4 nights, ($110 with discount) by this time is was 42 deg, so set
up & put the air con on & caught up with a few emails etc. We then caught up with a few phone calls & then we had Happy Hour with Tony & Cheryl & had tea & went to bed with the air con on all night. 16-3-10 Tuesday , a lot cooler today thank goodness I posted a few blog’s & then it started to rain, then thunder (and if anyone knows Annie, her little eyes nearly fell out of her head) she hid under anything she could. So we had to wait till the storm settled down. I have not seen so much rain for 11 months. When we went down the main street all the gutters were flooded. I went & got a hair cut ($31.50) & we went & had a drink at The Exchange Pub. There are so many heritage buildings , the main st is just great. We got a few things at Woollies & then went out to the Super Pitt Lookout , that looks out over the open cut working mine. It was great but raining & cold. We headed back to the van & I had a rest , it
was so cold (not used to it). We then had happy Hour with Tony & Cheryl & booked into do the Super Pitt Mine Tour on Thursday ($55 each) We had tea & settled in to watch Top Gear & Survivor . Wednesday 17-3-10 Today is a bit cloudy but warmer, probably about 25 deg. We went sight seeing to Boulder & walked up the main street which was full of historic buildings. We saw the only chemist with a museum in it & we went to a great pub & had a drink. It was called “The Metropole Hotel” which had a glass floor section that showed an old mine shaft under the pub. Apparently the miners 100 years ago tunnelled a shaft under the pub & the publican put beer in the bucket & they paid for it with the gold. We decided we would go back for tea that night. We had another look around Kalgoorlie & then came back to the van. We had a drink with Tony & Cheryl & then the four of us went off to The Metro for tea. We all had Fillet Steak & Vegs & had a great night, the
pub had so much atmosphere & it was St Patrick’s Day as well. They are doing the pub up & even had Hard Hats for lights on the ceiling. After we had eaten the resident dog Emma (she is a Bull Dog built like a Mac Truck )came wandering through & promptly sat herself under our table. Then another little four month old Jack Russell cross with two broken feet in plaster ( she had fallen off the top balcony) came in & there were two cats & a Galah as well. It was a neat night & we finished it off with a drive past the “Red Light District” & Cheryl & I had our photo taken outside the oldest & still working Brothel. We had one more drink when we got home & went to bed. Thursday 18-3-10 Up early today to go to our Super Pit Mine Tour at 9am. It was 2 hours long & very interesting. They explained all the workings of getting the gold out & processing it, I did not know there was so much involved. There is about 2 million dollars worth of gold go out of the pit every day, but
their expenses is amazing. I have never seen so many big dump trucks in my life, one tyre is $35 thousand . The tour went for two & a half hours & was well worth it. Although today must have been 35 deg, so very hot. We then went & got groceries & a few supplies for the Nullarbor as we leave Kalgoorlie tomorrow. I cut Den’s hair & he packed up a few things & I caught up with photos & Diary. So if you don’t hear from us for a week , don’t worry, we will be somewhere under the stars in the Nullarbor. Cheers Everyone. Sorry 2 pages of photos . xxxx
