Day 10 (13/11/16) Woke up at 8.45AM. Caravan park very quiet. Rain absolutely teeming down incessantly, making it difficult to time dashes to the toilets!
Rain has not stopped, so basically have written today off since not much is open on a Sunday, so rest up & watch tv it is!
Day 11 (14/11/16) Up early for the long drive to Wangaratta. Quite a large town with lots of good facilities & shopping. Managed to pick up a few bargains courtesy of eagle-eyed Deb.
Had lunch at the Wangaratta RSL before going to Gapsted Wines. Deb quaffed down a huge array of very generous samples before making some purchases for digestion at a later date!
Day 12 (15/11/16) Up early again, but this time to tackle the long, narrow, windy road to Falls Creek. Compared to Mt Hotham earlier in the trip, it is far, far colder in Falls Creek despite it being a much warmer day. Overlooking the massive Rocky Valley reservoir, we are literally freezing. From there we decided to head to the summit at Mt McKay. There is a road that heads up that looks like 45
degrees which I decided to tackle. Telling Deb to “buckle up”, I put the Pathfinder into 4WD low and started climbing the gravel track whilst going past thick snow.
At the top, we were amazed at the breathtaking views. I did almost a 360 degree video to show just how stunning it was. I think we used the word wow about 20 times. I cant wait to return here at a future date to film our entire visit with better equipment.
From there we came back down the steep track, taking it very carefully as the gravel was quite slippery. Our descent control worked brilliantly, ensuring that we reached the bottom safe & sound. We then flew along the rugged tracks to Pretty Valley dam, a much smaller impoundment but nonetheless very picturesque.
Other tracks led in all directions, but we decided to hold those for next time. We headed back to Falls Creek where we had a nice lunch before coming back down towards Mt Beauty. Stopping at Bogong, we looked over the peaceful Lake Guy, followed by the power station & lake a few kilometres below.
Finally back in Mt Beauty, we had dinner
before a solid nights sleep.
Day 13 (16/11/16) Up early for the third day in a row to go to Wangaratta to return my leaking waders. After obtaining a refund we headed up the highway towards the NSW border, crossing it into Albury for the only BCF in the area & purchasing another pair of waders that will not leak!
Had lunch at the SSA Club. A wonderful place we can highly recommend if you are ever in Albury & want damn good food. Deb had the $12 half Lobster, while I had Garlic Drunken Prawns. Brilliant meal, all cooked perfectly.
Another long drive back home, followed by a very light dinner & more solid sleep.
Day 14 (17/11/16) Today was fishing day. Glad to say the new waders did not leak. Fished the Kiewa River at Keegans Bridge & Mangans Bridge, but same old results. Not one fish sighted at all. Seems like I used up all of my luck in Omeo. Someone warned these bloody fish I was coming & the buggers have all gone on holiday somewhere!
Had a BBQ for dinner before getting on to update the holiday blog.
