Day 308 (29.1.08)
Having had a great time at the campsite, Tiana’s sister was due to be going back home today, so we were able to move back into Tiana’s flat for a bit. We packed up the van at the campsite for the last day. On our way back from the kitchen with our brekkie things we bumped into a Dutch couple we had met whilst watching the tennis who were packing up their camp en route to New Zealand. With too many things to carry they came over and gave us a couple of bits and pieces they couldn’t fit in. With a couple of extra chairs, pots and pans we made the journey through the city to Tiana’s.
Settling in with a cup of tea and bikkies we caught up with Sharelle, Emma and Tiana before they left for the airport.
Catching up on the internet and doing an afternoon of job hunting, we met Tiana again later in the afternoon. A few days ago she’d mentioned that if we couldn’t find anywhere else to live then maybe we could move into her flat and she’d move in permanently with Ash. We hadn’t had any
luck at all on the flat front so we chatted to her about this idea of us sub-letting her flat on a more permanent basis and decided to go for it. Bringing our bags in, we felt for the first time in Melbourne as though we were home.
Day 309 (30.1.08)
We had a morning of agency interviews with a really promising opportunity for some pretty terrible work for a reasonable amount of pay!
Whilst Mark went to another agency interview Chrissie met up with Bex for a day of rubbing shoulders with the stars and a visit to the famous home of Aussie soap, Ramsey Street. The Neighbours tour began with a bus journey out to the suburbs where Neighbours is filmed. On the way they showed a couple of classic episodes on the bus’s TV, seeing Helen Daniels on screen really takes you back! The first stop was a quick visit to ‘Erinsborough High’ the school they use in the soap. Then we made our way to the highlight of the tour Ramsey Street itself, actually a little cul-de-sac called Pin Oak Court. It was so cool to stand in the middle of the street
and look at all the houses that have become so familiar! As we stood there the guide helped us to reminisce about the various inhabitants of the houses in the street. Our final stop was to visit the actual studios where most of the scenes are shot. We were able to see Grease monkeys and the garage and the bus stop where everyone who catches a bus to Queensland or wherever leaves from! We then got to meet the actor that plays Riley and grill him for info about future storylines and him and our guide gave us some inside gossip about the actors and the soap. A great tour for a Neighbours fan!
The evening saw yet another basketball game and with Mark still not quite sure of all the rules it always makes for an interesting game.
Day 310 (31.1.08) to Day 312 (2.2.08)
Over the next few days we went to a few more agency interviews and kept our fingers crossed that some work would come in soon. We hit some local op shops in the search for a few bits and pieces to wear for work when it came and managed to pick
up a couple of cheap blank canvases while we were there. In spare moments we entertained ourselves by creating some masterpieces to make the flat feel like home!
We helped Tiana move her stuff over to Ash’s on Wednesday of this week (sadly that included the cat!) but she had kindly left us pretty much everything we need to survive over the next few months including bedding, towels, kitchen stuff etc. etc. We are so grateful to Tiana for helping us out so much, without her generosity we’d have been really stuck so thanks a million lady - we owe you big time!
The great thing about Melbourne is that there’s always something going on. Saturday marked the start of the St. Kilda festival. It would last for a week or so and involved all sorts of happenings from comedy gigs to art shows etc. etc. We headed down to the Acland Street area where lots of people were milling about at various stalls and we managed to find a really cool little art show called ‘The Postcard Show’. Local artists had produced their artwork on small canvases and there were hundreds on display in a massive variety
of styles for sale or just general perusal! We wandered around enthralled as we sipped on a glass of wine - how cultured of us!
