Saturday 4th April
After a long and very uncomfortable bus journey we arrived in Airlie Beach very early in the morning. We couldn't check in until 2pm so we put our bags into storage and had a wander around. We didn't do much today apart from shop a little and have a drink with the Danish guys from our Fraser trip. After checking into our hostel we did some laundry and hired our stinger suits ready for our Whitsundays trip. After spotting a 'FREE WiFi' sign in the McDonalds window we bought a bottle of wine and cheekily tipped out our lemonade from McDonalds and filled the cups up with something far more satisfying and emailed home and uploaded some of our Fraser Island photos.
Sunday 5th April
I had been looking forward to our Whitsunday Island sailing trip for so long and when i caught sight of the boat that we were going to be living on for the next three days i knew i wasn't going to be disappointed. The 'Anaconda II' was a 65ft fibreglass maxi sailing yacht and she was beautiful. Another great group for our trip, an English couple and some Swedish guys
and then some French people who looked like they might keep themselves to themselves (we were right!). We set sail from the harbour and Pippa and i found a nice spot on the boat to lay out our towel and do....nothing...until we arrived at our first stop just South of Hayman Island. We put on our glamourous stinger suits and jumped into the water for some snorkeling, the weather was beautiful and the islands all looked stunning. I can't tell you how relaxed to the very core i was lying on the deck of a beautiful sailing boat with the fresh ocean breeze to keep us cool from the awesome heat of the sun. We spent the afternoon cruising to our mooring place for the evening between Hook and Whitsunday Island. The crew cooked for us and we enjoyed a nice dinner under the stars again chatting with our group. It was far too hot and stuffy in our cabins to sleep so we kitted the deck out with our mattresses, sheets and pillows. It was gorgeous up there and the only sound we could hear was the ocean...well, we stopped laughing long enough!
Monday 6th April
Our
first full day in the Whitsundays and we sailed towards Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. Very very excited to see 'Paradise'! We got taken to the island in the zodiac and walked through the trees until the trail led us to the beach....WOW! I have never seen sand so white or an ocean so blue, it really was paradise! We were first there and so had the whole beach to ourselves for about 5 minutes before the masses arrived from the other boats and spoiled the view! Very inconsiderate! None of us wanted to leave, but we eventually had to drag ourselves away so that we could walk up to the look out point which gives you the most fantastic view over Hill Inlet. Reluctantly we headed back to the boat and sailed over to a beautiful snorkeling spot. It was the best snorkeling i've ever done, the coral and the fish were so colourful, we swam for quite a long time before we got picked up for some lunch. We could have stayed there for hours, except for this evening we were headed for South Molle Island where we would go to the bar for a few drinks with
people from other boats. The bar was lovely and our group seemed to be the liveliest bunch there which was nice. After a couple of drinks i made a silly silly bet with Pippa that she wouldn't jump in the pool for $20...after upping it to $30 i barely got my camera out in time before she was running back to me soaking wet to give me a hug! The Swedish guys weren't going to miss out on the fun and so preceded to throw us all in one by one leaving no one dry! It was a great evening and we all slept very well!
Tuesday 7th April
I could get very used to waking up to the beauty of the Whitsundays! What a great place to be hungover too...there's nothing like an ocean breeze to sort you out! The whole group felt a little worse for wear this morning and one of the Swedish guys didn't even make it up in time for our snorkeling! Another beautiful spot with lots of coral and fish, Pippa and I also spotted a very large eel and swam with a turtle! Unfortuntely when we got back on the boat
it was time to head back to Airlie Beach. The sail at the bow of the boat was down and had created a hammock type bed so Pippa and i snuggled up on that snoozed all the way back. We checked into our hostel again and had a nice cool shower before heading out to have a dinner with our group. In the bar we met up with most of our Fraser Island group again and had a couple of drinks before heading back to the hostel as we had a very early bus to catch in the morning to Mission Beach for our...errrr....skydive...!!
Lots of love from The Whitsunday Islands, QLD
