Rainbow Beach is a small town on the cost of Queensland but was my gateway to the largest sand island in the world Fraser! I took a 4x4 self drive safari with Dingos, the hostel I was staying in, in Rainbow Beach. The hostel itself was good with cheap grub and a very social atmosphere. Unfortunately my bus was 1.5 hours late so there was a mad rush to get to the briefing on time. I was put into a group of 9, which later proved to be an excellent bunch with a good dynamic. The 4x4s could hold 11 so our 9 fitted comfortably. We shared the driving, though some were a little more frightening than others. The roads were not roads but deep sand full of roots and potholes! It was really good fun, and everyone who wanted got a go.

Our first day on the island started with a trip to McKenzie Lake which has water so pure that it can't sustain any wildlife or plants. It was stunning fresh crystal clear water set in forest with a fringe of fine white sand. I could have spent all day here but after lunch we had to move

on to Lake Wabbie. A massive sand dune has, over the year, been taking over the lake. Racing down the dune and jumping into the lake was great fun. That night was spent camping near the beach with no facilities except what we had bought with us! It was a great night with plenty of booze and partying. We meet up with another car from the hostel and all camped together.

The second day we went to lake Allom where we swam with turtles in a lake full of tea tree oil. This helped to freshen us up a little. That afternoon we saw the champagne pools at the top of the island and then camped with some aboriginals. We struck gold here and had an outdoor kitchen, hot showers and a shelter where the 20 of us slept. Joe, one of our hosts played a piece a piping as a didgeridoo and told us the creation story of Fraser and took us on a short bush tucker tour in the morning.

Unfortunately all good things come to an end and we had to leave on the third day. I just to say thanks to all my group
