Gulf Country Caravan Park
Porcupine Gorge - Bang Bang Rest area - Karumba

We left Porcupine Gorge at about 8am and headed towards Julia Creek, stopping at Richmond for breakfast. We arrived at Julia Creek too early to stop, and decided to continue on along the road between Julia Creek and Bourke and Wills Junction - we could stop at Bourke and Wills roadhouse overnight. When we arrived there though we decided to have an ice-cream and continue to the next rest area which was 90km closer to Karumba. This was actually not a bad rest area, but the noisy caravan near us kept me awake most of the night - some people have no respect for fellow travellers.

The best thing about the long drive that day was the short drive into Karumba the following day. We stopped at Normanton for breakfast and then arrived at Karumba at about 10am. There are a lot of Brolgas in this area and we noticed that they are often in groups of three. We think it may be mum, dad and child... The last time we were here, the wetland and floodways between Normanton and Karumba were covered with water (often

up to the side of the road) - this time it is very dry and dusty.

After checking into the caravan park we discovered that the guys on the Ulysses 7 out/7 back ride from Grafton were ahead of schedule and would also be arriving soon - so they came to the same caravan park. We had a nice afternoon and night catching up with the boys, and Kevin drove us all to the to the sunset pub for dinner with a view of the sun setting over the Gulf of Carpentaria - always stunning. The boys packed up and left the next morning, homeward bound.

We stayed for another day to do the necessaries (laundry/shopping) and to plan for the next leg of our journey. We were very disappointed to find that you can no longer get fresh cooked prawns straight off the trawler (like we did last trip). The local cafe had nice Barramundi and chips for dinner though.

From Karumba we are going to Lawn Hill National Park and will then follow the Savannah way (with various detours along the way) through to Mataranka.

Must bookmark a map
I am going to have to bookmark a map to refer to while I read. I keep trying, unsuccessfully, where you are. Loved that curlew or magpie hanging out on the roo. I am sure the roo enjoyed the delouse as much as the bird appreciated the food.

I meant to add the route plan (from Wikicamps) to each blog... I've added for the next blog and will try to remember for future ones :)
