Fraser Island
We travelled to Hevey Bay - the gateway to Fraser Island.
There were two types of trip that you can do o Fraser Island, a self drive trip or a safari trip where by you have a guide. we opted for the second option. We thought that being put in groups with people and asked to navigate a four by four across the island was asking for trouble. I knew that I would not want to let anyone else do the driving, and I was on holiday. It's not about arguing with people ha ha ha.
The Cool dingo's trip that we subscribed to was a three day safari on a big bus/ four by four type thing. All the people on the safari trip stayed in a cabin on the centre of the Island. We had an amazing time. This might be my favourite place so far. we had an awesome group of people and had a load of mad nights as well.
On the first day we were driven to Lake Macenzie - which was beautiful. The roads were pretty bumpy and it really felt as though we were on a mini
rollercoster everyday. Fraser Island is world heritage site - an Island made completely out of sand. Amazingly there is load of vegetation on the island and we treked through a load of rainforest and were shown loads of different plants and sites. One tree was so wide that it took about seven people to get their hands around the trunk.
On the first night we made out way back to the beach with couple of cans of GnT and watched the sun set- is this not heaven?
One of the things that I am loving about all the trips that we have doe is the vast amount of tea/ coffee breaks that the guides provide. They cater for so many "POMES" (Prisoners of Mother England) that they know about our liking for tea. This pleased me immensely - though with the bumpy track my poor bladder was in knots by the end of the day...
Fraser Island has it's own Eco System and so on one side it could be boiling hot with bright sunshine and on the other side it could be raining. This was demonstrated perfectly as we drove through the sun down the beach
until we came to Indian Head - a huge look out which clearly provided some amazing views of the island. However as we got out of the bus the heavens opened and we were drenched. Determined to get a photo of the view Leyla and I went up the hill. It was slippy ad we found it easier to climb up bare foot. I literally went to the top took one photo and slipped my way back down the hill- photo of us looking like drowned rats to come!
The highlights of the mountain were the champagne pool and the sandscapes which was saw at the end of the trip.
The champagne pool is a name that was given to a little cove on the island that captures the waves of the sea. The waves bounce around the cove and create bubbles. You have to time your visit to the pools as the waves can get too choppy and you could run the risk of drowning! It was gorgeous - it felt like an out door hot tube. Bliss.
My favourite part of the Island was lake Wallobee, by some miracle a lake has formed at the
bottom of the sandscape (think dessert) . I know I m saying that everywhere is beautiful and amazing - but this place was seriously something else. I just can not put into words how perfect this place was.
The only downer to this place was the flies. Everything seemed to want me on this day. Every where I went there was a little swam of flies surrounding me - I think it was the smell of the suntan lotion. Then the next thing I knew the biggest wasp I have every seen made its way for my tummy. I turned and pegged it up the sand - and stacked it and landed on my face... The wasp only bloody followed me up the sand so I turned and ran full pelt and bombed it into the lake.... Standing in the lake and a bit scared to leave I turned to then see a massive black catfish making its way towards me! FFS
I dried off by walking across the sand to our driver.. it only took 45 minutes to cross the sand creak.... phew!
On a final note I just want to write about our dinner that
night. All you can eat dominos pizza for ten dollars - which is about £5. Determined to get my money's worth I ate nine slices of pizza. I went up to get a drink, felt the wind blow and heard a noise. I turned around to see Noel one of the Irish lads that we had met with a face full of pizza.
I am still laughing to myself now....
