After North Queensland we set off South towards our next major stop, Fraser Island. Before we got there we managed to catch up with our friends who are travelling round the world for a year. We caught up with them in time for Steph's birthday and spent a great day on the beach getting in some kiting as well. (Thanks for making my birthday really special guys, great bbq!)
We stayed near the pretty town of Hervey Bay for one night before catching the ferry across to the largest sand island in the world!
Fraser Island is out of this world! The sand is the whitest, the water the bluest and the Jeep Wrangler we hired was the best toy in the world! We had a brilliant (if a little bumpy) three days exploring the 150 mile long sand island, no tarmac (or bitumen as the Aussies would say) except for a small patch in the main resort. The tracks were formed when logging was an industry on the island, these are still used to get around today. The “motorway” on the island consists of a seventy-five mile beach, which we were allowed to drive down at 80 kph
Swimming hole
Can't remember the name but this was a beautiful waterfall we went swimming in on stephs birthday (tide permitting)! the motorway also doubles as the runway!
We managed to see quite a few dingo’s and even caught one on camera. The sand is so fine they used to use it to clean jewellery and the water in the lakes is slightly acidic so it felt like you had had an exfoliating bath! Wish I could have bottled some up to bring back! The lakes are bath temperature, which made up for the fact you couldn’t go in the sea cause of sharks!
