Friday 15th July 2011 Cairns to Cooktown
Phil is our fearless leader for a couple of days while Murray repairs a tie rod. We arrived in Mossman to encounter John and Greg (from the first group) awaiting the arrival of a tail shaft to replace their broken one. We were going to have a coffee with them in town, but there was a big NAIDOC festival event happening, and the place was packed, so we’ve left it until further up the road (hope they get their car mended and rejoin us at Weipa). On up to Mossman Gorge, where we walked up the new (since we were last there a long time ago) elevated walkway through the rainforest. There’s an incredible amount of moss on everything, and what were those amazing purple pear-shaped and sized fruits on the forest floor? I wouldn’t want to be under the tree when one dropped! We continued northward, with morning tea/lunch at Mount Molloy – no further car troubles, even climbing the switchback road to Grassy Hill Lookout in Cooktown. Fantastic 360 degree views!
