G'day again,
Here to fill you in on the latest shenanigans of our trip.
Our next stop was Fraser Island for two nights of camping and a lot of 4x4 driving on sand. Or for me a lot of sitting in the back seat and looking pretty. I know everybody says this but we definitely had the best car of people. No egos and just laid back easy going vibe to the car. I'd like to think my DJ skills were the reason for this 😊 We visited Lake McKenzie which was spectacular, so clear & calm. Great group pics & bonding over some blokes washing themselves with sand. This was our favourite spot of the trip.
The next day it was out early & 1st stop was Champagne Pools. Judging by the name we were expecting something as amazing as Lake McKenzie, it fell a little short of expectations. We headed to Indian Head next for a 360 degree view of the Island. Ocean & sand for miles. We went to Eli(Hangover) Creek next for a chill in a natural lazy river and by chill we really mean chill, water was about 18 degrees but was needed
on such a hot day. That night we ventured to the beach in hunt of dingos (just kidding). We saw an unbelievable Blood Moon Rising and Lightning from the beach. Someone was a little scared in case of Dingos at the beach and for once it wasn't me, cough, Emma, cough.
Due to high tide we couldn't get to our next spot for a couple of hours so it was back to Hangover Creek for the morning. The cold water was welcomed after I walked to the toilet with no shoes on and almost got 1st degree burns on my feet. We hit up a Tea Tree lake which looked disgusting but was actually really nice once you got in. We then discovered Emma had 71 bites on legs & back from Mozzies & Sand Flies. I had 0. "Bit selfish of you Derek"
The following day was a chill out day and then a 5 hour bus to our next stop, 1770. We stayed at Cool Bananas which is run by the George Costanza from Seinfeld, obviously not him but the exact same personality. Asking a question was like asking for $50. We had a tour with
Scooter Roo booked that day. This is mini chopper bikes tour around the town. This was brilliant. After spending the longest time of any bloke in history going round the practice circuit, I was ready to go. Emma wasn't as lucky. We were running out of time & the guy made the decision for her to ride on the back of his bike. Best for everyone.
We cruised round for about 3-4 hours on the bike. The tour wasn't without incident as one of the English girls crashed into another and fell off her bike. Emma seen it happening and said it was bad. She done a great job to console the girl after & gave her 2 bananas for her nerves. They say bananas or whiskey will calm your nerves. We had an overnight bus to Airlie Beach next.
We had 2 nights in Airlie Beach before our Whitsundays tour. Pretty uneventful, just worked on the tans. The Whitsundays boat was great. We had our 1st casualty of the holidays when Emma's Havianas broke, it was a sad moment, especially when she came back with green Aussiana's as a replacement. "They are horrible" was the 1st thing
I said which didn't help the mood.
Once on the boat it was plain sailing, pun totally intended. Stopped after about 90 mins for a swim, jump off the driving board & going down the slide. That night we were treated to a show by a dolphin. It lasted about 5 hours with everyone hanging over the side to catch a glimpse. The dolphin was showing off and loving the attention.
The next morning was an early start & a trip to Whitehaven Beach. What a place! Just spectacular. Lovely view, sand & water. This is where I was swimming with the shark. By swimming with the shark I mean we were in a lagoon & a lemon shark was swimming around and was more afraid of us. I think I was still more afraid of the shark! Next was snorkelling & finding Nemo. The snorkelling was great but didn't find Nemo yet.
At dinner we discovered Johnny 4-Bellies. He was one of the slimmest blokes I have ever seen but he was one of the best grubbers. 4 plates of spag bol later, I was in awe of him.
We had more snorkelling & messing
around the next morning before we headed back to land. Still no Nemo, where are you Nemo? I know, the Great Barrier Reef, which happened to be our next stop.
10 hours on a bus later we arrived in Cairns. We had a free day to work the tan some more, "I look great with a tan Emma" - Derek. Our tour to the Great Barrier Reef was brilliant. Early start & more boat action. Snorkelling for the day. Emma seen a turtle which she was enjoying rubbing in my face that I didn't see it! After lunch we had more snorkelling & WE FOUND NEMO! The Reef Sharks had taken the day off so I couldn't swim with them again 😊
CRISIS that evening. I had lost one of our memory cards which had half of our East Coast pics & vids and all our vids from New Zealand. Having searched all bags & the room we walked to the city to have look for it. No joy and we went to bed in bad form. Only option was to ring the boat company to see if it was dropped on the boat. Turns out it was
and it was handed in. I am definitely the luckiest man going, snakeskin boots and all that. I want to thank Emma for the reassurance of total silence when I was beating myself up. "I'm such an eijit" ...... Silence.
We had our Uncle Brian's Tour next. This was so much fun. Walks in the rainforest, lots of swimming in different spots. Huge lunch which included dessert. We floated better after lunch. Got to see the Peter Andre Falls (Milla Milla Falls) and of course get the Peter Andre photo. Coldest water ever, we have a new found respect for Peter after swimming in the water. Sing song all day with the guide, waving at random people, no booze involved, I swear.
Next stop Perth & the West Coast!
