Would you expect anything less?!
Bec C looking happy and dirty after her quad biking experience So we arrive in Cairns thinking we've enjoyed the last week of relaxing but really just want to get back into being busy and seeing things, but would you believe it, there was hardly anything to do. The town centre was pretty nice, plenty of shops (especially didgeridoo shops where we both bought the famous aboriginal artifact), the esplanade was cool, many eateries, the occasional band would churn out a few tunes (not christmas tunes to Becs S disappointment) and the lagoon was well, like any other lagoon, nice and certainly handy to have in the stinger season. Cairns is surrounded by mountainside and is an idyllic place. To be fair we were probably a little lazy in finding things to do but mostly because we would have to go out of Cairns to see them.
We did however go quad biking which was crazily fun. The coach journey up into the winding mountainside gave lovely views over Cairns. There were only the three of us and our instructor so he really pushed us and made us go fast (well not that Bec S needs encouragement)!! After a few goes around a sandy track, practising changing gears and cornering we
went into the Karunda Forest. This is where the fun really started. At times we sped through the forest, over bumps, sometimes getting us airbourne and other times we had to take it slow as we climbed up and down steep hills. It was at this point (going down and then up a steep hill) that Bec S fell off her bike. As she hit the bottom she accelarated but didnt quite find the track and the quad just flipped backwards throwing her from the bike. She was fine though as she landed on her bottom! Thankfully the bike didn't come back down on top of her, just a little chuckle and a quick apology to the instructor and she was on her way again. Bec C on the other hand managed to remain firmly seated on her bike although she did manage to confuse quad biking with her moped. Bec C kept putting her legs out trying to balance herself (even though its on four wheels!!) only to then bash her legs against trees, ouch.
Although there hasn't been much rain in Queensland there did happen to be a few muddy ditches and unlike the rest of us
who just drove around them, Bec C yep you guessed it, drove straight through them. Mud everywhere, face, clothes, legs and arms not to mention the state of the bike. Funnily she just drove on as if nothing was out of the ordinary.
The day came for the long awaited Cape Tribulation tour. It was a fun filled day packed up with excitement and giggles. Cape Tribulation named this by the legendary Captain Cook is where the rainforest dramatically meets the Great Barrier Reef. Driving through the Daintree National park and the Captain Cook Highway gave us the opportunity to drive along the coast with some amazing views. First stop on the tour was Mossman Gorge where we did a half hour walk into the national park area spotting wildlife as we went. The waters of the creek flowing next to the boardwalk were crystal clear and we were luckily enough to strip down and go for a dip in a much wider section. Whilst paddling you could see the occasional fish but the most fun was to be had fighting the current and trying to swim through the rocks. All but the tour guide failed to swim through,
Bec S though did the most impressive job and gave up 10 seconds short of making it. Bec Cs attempt however was rather pathetic, she failed to go anywhere but backwards. After drying off we made our way to the Daintree River for our cruise. It was an awesome little cruise, we had a guide driving the boat who also acted as the wildlife spotter, we saw fruit bats, funny bright green frogs, lots of birds and to Bec S's amazement and happiness a crocodile in the wild. Before finally making it to the Cape Tribulation beach we stopped off at the Mardja Botanical boardwalk for another nice walk. Bec C was less enthusiastic about this walk as there were big spiders everywhere, not good! Cape Tribulation beach was kind of everything we expected it to be although a little on the small side, but beautiful nontheless. The rainforest does literally meet the sea.
