back at Kennedy's in Brisbane
Where we left to start our adventure, almost 2 years ago. Hi all,
After 2 days enjoying the hot pools at Maree (and not enjoying the frosts that froze our waterpipes), we headed north west, towards St George. We stopped at Nindigully Pub (established in 1864, it holds the longest continued liquor licence in Queensland), and decided to stay the night at the freepark area nearby on the Moonie River bank. After a relaxing afternoon, we sampled the pub's cheap drinks at Happy Hour, and decided to have dinner there too. The flood waters in March had come right up to the doorstep of the pub, and all around this area you could see the height the floods had been. Some roads were damaged and were still being repaired.
The next day we continued on to St George, where we stayed a night. The carved emu egg display was amazing, the eggs were all illuminated, and intricately carved to different thicknesses to give different colours. There were lots of different geometric designs and other theme carvings. The Balonne River had flooded at St George, the height it came to was to the top of the rail of the bridge. We walked beside the river, and tried some of the fitness machines, but
We fit in here!!
our new dressing gowns to wear to the hot pools at Moree. the grass areas were being resown.
From St George we headed east in drizzle. There are still some prickly pear trees growing on the sides of the roads in this area - it had been a huge problem. This area looks more lush than usual. At Moonie, we had lunch in the van at the crossroads, then decided to keep going to Tara, where the road trains don't get to, for the night. We parked by the lagoon, and the drizzle continued. It was quite cold. A council guy came by about 5pm, to say if we stayed where we were, we probably wouldn't get out as the clay/silt was becoming very slippery. We managed (just!) to slip and slide our way to a higher area that had gravel - the landcruiser got a workout, and I got wet and muddy helping direct from outside! For $5 we could plug into power at the toilet/shower block which was great news as we could put the heater on and warm up the van. People came and went to 11pm, and again in the morning to use the public hot water shower.
From Tara we headed east to Dalby, then on to
Toowoomba, where we stayed a night with Jan and Jon Hamilton , our neice Toni's partner Gus' parents. At last we met, after just missing each other at Kalgooli /Esperance, in WA. We had a great night with them.
The next day we drove back to Brisbane , and Kennedys at Wellington Point, where we first started our trip. Today our car is in for a service, and Chris is banging away with a hammer and a big smile, helping Snow line a "craft room" for Zena downstairs. We will stay here until Thursday, then will drive north of the city to Scarborough and catch up with our friends Margaret and Trevor (we haven't seen them since Tasmania, last year). On Saturday , Allen and Marijke join us for 8 days, so we will travel up to the Sunshine Coast and Hervey Bay with them. We're looking forward to that. Today is sunny, and much warmer than we have had. Hopefully it will be more like that from now on up to Cairns.
Regards Lynne and Chris
