Driving, he passes me the letter "Can you open this for me, what is it?" I open, thinking it is registered mail for our business, not thinking anything suspicious at all.... Lyric Theatre, tickets, it takes a moment for my mind to realise what it is. He has a cheeky grin, I am totally surprised. Tickets for Miss Saigon, near the front.
*VERY EXPENSIVE* What a surprise!
We drive on, looking forward to what next week holds.

Okay... So now I can relax!! Our package came with drinks so we sat in the foyer with our lemon, lime and bitters. There were beautiful lanterns and cardboard people with oriental cone hats. We recived a litte package that had fortune cookies, chocolates, paper fan and a pen. We had thought we would recieve the program with our Miss Saigon Package, which we did not end up with and unfortunately we didn't have the extra $20 to buy the program. I was wearing the right colour!! I didn't
even think about it before I left home (it was cold/raining and my nicest jacket is red) but red was the colour of the evening - dah!!
When we took our seats I was surprised at how close we were. I actually liked our spot better than closer. We were in the middle, 8th row. The front rows were too close for my liking. I thought it would be too loud and you would have to look upand crane your neck to see all the awesome stage props. There was strictly NO photography or videoing, so I have no pictures of what the show was actually like for you all 😞
As with a lot of these things - 80% of it was fantastic 20% dubious! The opening scene had a LOT of swearing in it. A lady behind me whispered.. "Oh the Swearing" so I was pleased that someone else felt the same way! I also felt very uncomfortable with the whole brothel scene. Lets just say the girls did their acting very well!! There was lots of booty slapping and gyrating and simulated intense making out with the GI's. Obviously we should have known this... but
being the uncultured that we are... we didn't!! Hubby bought the tickets without any research... Next time, I think we will put a little more research in!! So the two fairly long scenes featuring the call girls had us with our eyes squinted. Though it made hubby sad, he kept thinking for the poor main girl Kim... run away.. ran away... it did show how this lifestyle can be very life altering and destroying.
However all the other scenes were AMAZING.... The props and backgrounds just seemed to glide on in. The houses and fences and everything moved around. It was done so well you barely seemed to notice. The producer did a good job with that I think. They showed tape from children in Orphanages. Many of these were bi racial. I had never previously thought about children that we fathered by African American Soldiers. There were also American Asians. It was very sad and almost made me cry. Seeing hundreds of children in cots lined up, just sitting there, many with no nappies/diapers on was truly sad.
There was a little boy who played the role of the 3 year old he was fantastic. He was
dragged around, fought over, lay down in bed etc. He did so well. At the end he got the biggest clap from the audience. The music was loud and wonderful. I got goosebumps in a few of the songs. In particular the songs The movie of my mind and Sun and Moon. Here are a few lyrics from them:
You are sunlight and I moon Midnight and high noon Sharing the sky We have been blessed, you and I Your moon still floats on high The birds awake The stars shine too I reach for you And we meet in the sky! You are sunlight and I moon Joined here light'ning the sky With the flame Of love
I was also a little unprepared for the ending. I knew it was a tragic love story... I just didn't know how tragic. All in all I suppose it provoked what it was meant to. Lost love, lost life, tragedy of war, innocence and the loss of it.
