I was talking to a mate last year about going to Brisbane for a weekend to watch the football and perhaps just have a few drinks. In the end four of us went, Timmay, Kutts, Steve and myself, we booked a few rooms at the Marque Hotel right in the middle of the CBD close to the Casino and South Bank bridge.
We arrived in Brisbane around 10.35am and took a cab to town before leaving our bags at the hotel and heading off to explore a bit, first stop was Queens St where we had a bight to eat before crossing the river and wandering down South Bankwhere we hopped on a Catamaran for a view of the city from the river. Brisbane reminds me a bit of Auckland and Dunedin and perhaps a little of Darwin. The weather was pleasant and after an hour or so we found ourselves in a pub down riverside called the Pig and Whistle where we indulged in an imperial or two before hitting an Irish Pub not far from the hotel.
We spent the rest off the day and most of the night in pubs either in the city or down
in Fortitude Valley, stopping only long enough to eat a kebab or two, unfortunately I piked earlier than the other lads.
Was up early the next morning and ready to go check out some more of the city, had breakfast at the pancake kitchen before hitting the pavement, we headed to the markets at South Bank, before spending about three or four hours wandering around the city before heading back out to The Valley this time on foot. Brisbane is an attractive city and we really enjoyed the walk, however it was soon time to find another pub so we headed into the city and settled into an another Irish joint called "Mcgoolies" or something.
It was a pleasant place to watch some footy and consume a few Guinesses in the prelude to our walk from the hotel to the Gabba for the game. Again it was a pleasant walk from the hotel through the University and across the bridge, we stopped at a nautical themed pub for another drink, then slogged our way up the hill to the Brisbane German Club. The Club is opposite the stadium so we settled in to drink more pints until just
before the game started.
The stadium was quite impressive, it doven hold as many people as football bark but looks bigger and the view was good from where we were, we ate junk food, drank more beer and screamed our heads off, I was personally pretty pissed by now and spilled a drink on the dude in front of me. The game was of a high standard and the Crows boys won by about 5 goals.
It was then back to the German Club which was filling up with Crows fans for an after match presentation of some of the players, I am not really sure how long we were there for. After that we retraced our steps back into town arriving at the hotel just in time to avoid a pretty heavy down pour. The other lads went off to the Casino and I went on a sugar quest at the 7/11.
The final morning was pretty low key, had a feed, ordered a cab and headed to the airport.
It was a good boys weekend sport and booze what more can anyone want?
