17th January 2008 - CRIKEY........THE ZOO WAS AWESOME!!!
We arrived at the zoo just after 9am......we were all excited!! There wasn't much of a queue and so once we had paid and had dumped our backpacks in a locker we set off and got ready for some animal action!! Looking at the map there weren't loads of animals here like at the Singapore Zoo but a lot of it was hands on and so I prepared myself to be brave!!
First we saw a baby alligator being carried around by a zoo worker.....all decked out in the cream safari outfit like Steve Irwin used to wear. So cool!! The alligator was 2 years old yet still tiny compared to how big he would grow!! I gave him a little stroke and we continued off into the zoo.
Along our way we saw a lizard section with a little boy (once again decked out in the safari outfit) chasing the lizards about. There was a security guard with him and we quickly realised that it was Steve Irwin's son Robert!! He was so cute bless him and the way he was chasing the lizards he definitely was his fathers son!!
We wandered around for a while looking at the crocs and alligators before heading to information. We were in luck as right next to the information point was the photo section and the first animal up was the koala. There was only one person in the queue before us....sweet timing!!! I joined the queue and paid for my photo cuddling a koala. He was called Charlie and was very cute despite him digging his claws in my stomach and marking my belly through my top!! It was a good job the keeper put a paper towel in my hand too as he proceeded to poo on my hand!! Nice!! He was too cute to be mad though!! Worth doing and I was pleased with the photo!!
From there we had a little walk into the zoo again and lined up for the elephant feeding show. They didn't get the animals to perform but instead lined everyone up so we could all feed them a carrot. It was pretty cool but very rushed as lots of people were queing up. Still...a nice touch being able to feed an Asian Elephant.....not something you do everyday!! And...how brave am I getting?
In Thailand I was scared of the Elephants and here I am queing up to feed them!! Proud of myself and how far I have come with the animals!!
From the elephants we went to the Crocoseum to check out the big show 'Wildlife Warriers' with birds, snakes and crocs. We just expected an animal show but we got more than we bargained for. The keepers warmed up the audience and got us doing mexican waves and animal impressions etc and then they introduced the first act.....Bindi (Steve Irwin's daughter) and The Croc Men. We expected something to do with crocs but no......they were singing and doing dances about the animals. It was pretty cute for the first couple of songs and all the kids in the crowd went to the front and danced along. 10 songs later it was a bit much. It was a little like they were trying to make her a child star and a bit too contrived!! We were there to see a croc show not a dance show!! Still she tried bless her!!
Following the singing and dancing Bindi then came into the arena and performed a solo whilst walking a pony
around. I wasn't sure about that part but I suppose it was all part of keeping the Irwin name alive!! Following her solo the animals finally came out. The keepers brought snakes out for us to see and then did a bit of a bird show with a few birds flying over our heads. It was cool!!
Then came the main act and amazingly it was fronted by Steve Irwin's wife - Terry. They are like the royal family over here. Bindi and Robert were also in the arena but they didn't go near the crocs....bit too young yet I imagine. Can't believe they were all there on the day we visited...so lucky!! Terry led the croc act with help from a few keepers. They got it jumping for food, chasing them in the water and even got it to do a death roll!! Scary stuff but a good show. She had a similiar mannerism to Steve and so it worked really well. Made me thing about the canoe trip we would be venturing on soon....I hoped we didn't meet any crocs thats for sure!! So powerful and strong!!! Awesome show!!
From the croc show we all split
off. Nat went to see the Otter show and Hatty and I went to look around the zoo. We went to see the elephants and tigers and then went into Roo Heaven. So many kangaroos and so tame. We bought a bag of food and fed away. They were very gentle and I could've fed them all day. I found a particularly nice one that put both its paws/hands up on my arm as it ate. Very cute and once again...how brave am I?!!
After feeding the kangaroos for a while we wandered further around as saw the wombats (so cute and cuddly looking), camels, foxes, tazmanain devils (disappointed they didn't spin like the cartoon), lizards, snakes and dingos though I stayed well back from the fence. Kangaroos and Koalas I can cope with but Dingos........NO!!! That was as close as I ever hoped to get to one!! My favourite were the giant tortoises......brill!! They strated humping at one point though and it was so funny as I listened to a parent try to explain to her children what they were doing!! You can't buy that sort of humour!!
I ended the day the zoo with a up
of tea in the cafe upstairs whilst we waited until 3.30pm to catch the bus to Noosa. Perfect end to the zoo ezperience. I had really enjoyd the hands on experienes at the zoo and thought it was well worth the visit!! I was bloody tired though and as soon as I got on the bus I fell asleep!! It's a hard life this travelling business!!!
