Mackay - Airlie Beach via Cedar Creek Falls
We wake up early today as we have two skylights in our room without any curtains covering them, so it proves impossible to sleep once the sun rises. I managed to get quiet a good nights sleep and would have slept right through if it hadn’t of been for Greg sleep talking saying “We are going to go on loads of big rides tomorrow.” Have a bit of a freaky moment in the hostel when Greg spots a guy in our hostel who had been watching the Rangers v Dundee Utd game next to us in the Score bar in Sydney. Can’t believe he is in the same hostel as us at the exact same time. Spooky!
On our way to Airlie Beach we stop off at a place called Cedar Creek Falls which is a complete nightmare to reach as it is all dusty small roads made up of small stones instead of tarmac. We just pray we don’t puncture a tyre as we are up Cedar Creek without a paddle if so. Fortunately we get there all wheels in tact and it’s well worth the detour. Cedar Creek Falls
is a beautiful little watering hole with turquoise water and a waterfall. We decide to go for a dip even although the water is freezing, much to the delight of the tourists including a couple from Glasgow. We even spot a turtle swimming in the lake which is cool. Let’s hope there were no crocodiles stalking us… After devouring the remains of last nights pasta for lunch, we take a walk up the side of the waterfall to the top. Perhaps not such a good idea in flip-flops, but we make it in one piece. It’s even more spectacular from the top. Continuing on to Airlie beach takes us about another hour so we arrive mid-afternoon. The main backpackers is called Magnum’s which has absolutely everything under one roof, including a bar, café restaurant and nightclub. We ask the girl at reception to give us a room as far away from the nightclub as possible, and she duly obliges.
Our next dilemma is to decide what Whitsunday cruise we are going do for the next 2 days. We chat to the girl on the tour desk in the hostel and she gives us three choices which are all roughly
Airlie Beach
Dangerous Creatures the same price. We hum and haw for ages until eventually Greg grabs the bull by the horns and chooses the cheapest one (Surprise, surprise). It turns out that by booking through the hostel, we receive 2 free nights accommodation, free luggage storage and free internet use. Half an hour after we book the tour, OZ sail phone us to let us know our boat has been grounded, and will not be sailing tomorrow. We both think that means our tour is cancelled, but it turns out they upgrade us to a bigger boat which sails for an extra day, at no added cost. Happy days We grab dinner at a local fish and chip shop called ‘Fancy Fish’, that prepares all their freshly caught fish made to order. We order fish with a baked potato on the side and it is one of the nicest (and healthiest) chippies we have ever had. Greg made me promise to include it in the blog, so I have. We make use of the free internet at McDonalds again (saving us a small fortune) then into the room for a nice glass of vino and more of our favourite card game.
