We were out of the caravan park by 6:30 AM and we even cooked breakfast and had showers. I’m writing this as we drive along, back on the Pacific Coast Highway.
We’ve messed around too much and need to get a full days drive in today to get some miles behind us. The drive is an event in itself, though. We’ve seen mango orchards, dozens of little ponds with lotus blooms, small mountains, beautiful rivers, more banana plantations, charming towns with many Queenslanders (style of architecture, that I’m falling in love with) homes, miles of sugar cane fields and eucalyptus forests (no koala spottings), and about 20 dead kangaroos on the road…we lost count. We’ve seen clouds, rain, and sunshine and have passed the Tropic of Capricorn. We stopped near Camila to look at the extreme tides. At the shoreline it looked like the ocean was about a mile away. There is still very little rubbish and litter, but the Queensland homes seem a little shabbier in general than in New South Wales, especially in the sugar mill towns. We stopped at yet another bakery where the advertised pies are the meat pies that make a good

quick lunch. But the highlight for us was the dozens of kangaroos along the road. They are everywhere! The narrow highway with no shoulders makes it impossible to stop to photograph or to even watch for any length of time. But we did enjoy seeing them. As they bounce away, you can’t help but hear, “boing, boing, boing” in your mind.

We are now in a caravan park at Airlie Beach near Shute Harbor, the jumping off place for the Whitsunday Islands. Joe put in a lot of hours of driving today. I don’t know how he does it.
