The Koala gang ready to go
On our way to Fraser Island Well we survived Fraser Island and had a awesome time in the process.
When we first arrived at the backpackers in Hervey Bay we were a little anxious but excited. All the people around seemed to be guys so I started to worry about being the only girl amongst a bunch of adrenaline hyped guys. But luckily right at the last minute a load of girls turned up to me relief. We were all put in groups of 10-12 and our group seemed to be the best with 3 couples, 2 single guys and 2 single girls- all who were a great laugh but still sensible.
After a long safety talk we all headed to the shops to buy our food and alcohol for the 3 days that we were to be on the Island. This was a little stange buying our shopping with complete strangers but luckily we had some organised people with us.
A few drinks together and off to bed as it was an early rise the next morning- however we needent have bothered as a bunch of Irish idiots decided to keep us up half the night by banging the wall and throwing fruit around whilst screaming
at the top of their lungs!
Never mind the next day was still fab and made up for the lack of sleep.
We all herded into the 4WD after packing it up, jumped on the ferrie on our way to Fraser Island (the biggest sand Island in the world).
What a crack we had- proper off-roading, swimming in the lakes, hiking through the rainforest and drinking away the nights. We were quite lucky and only got stuck in the sand once and that was only briefly, although we almost tipped a couple of times, which was a little scary.
Out of the 10 of us, 7 drove so you can imagine what some of the bad drivers were like! I really enjoyed driving on the beach as it was mostly flat but the off-roading was quite hard and with 9 back-seat drivers giving you different instructions it became a bit of a chore and so David drove most of the way (he loved it! and everyone trusted him).
First was a beautiful freshwater lake fringed with white sand. We couldn't wait to jump in to get out of the blazing sun and rinse off the sand that got everywhere!
We
all had a chat and the boys played games before heading to the shipwreck (see pic).
we pulled over by the side of the beach and set up camp. That night we had a BBQ on the beach, played drinking games and stared at the stars, which were just amazing I have never seen so may stars and so clearly.
Although we paddled in the sea you are prohibited to swim in the area around Fraser Island as it is a breeding ground for Tiger-sharks and the current is really strong too.
Next day was lots of driving until we reached Indian Head- a great place to view the island. We climbed that and then took an hours walk along the beach to Champayne waters. This is a natural spa from sea water spilling over the rocks.
The next lake we went to was an hours walk through the rainforest where we saw lots of huge spiders, bugs and lizards- no snakes unfortunately. Once at the lake the boys all took turns throwing themselves down the dunes into the lake. But the girls weren't up for it as the water was green and full of cat fish nibbling at toes.
Plus it had just began to rain to we headed back to the van. On the way we got soaked but it was a giggle.
It continued to rain that night so putting up tents and making dinner was amuzing to say the least. We had a visit from the local dingos, who found the meat that the boys had buried dispite the girls warning not to. And so stayed about for a while scaring the shit out of a couple of the girls! hehe
The following morning we were swarmed with these huge flying bugs and so we were very quick to leave. Our last visit was to Lake McKenzie, the largest lake on Fraser Island, which was just beautiful and so we stayed the whole morning.
It was time to head back to the main land but we were all happy and thought that we had the perfect amount of time on the Island.
Back on land (without sand everywhere!!) the group went out for dinner, a good chat and to say our goodbyes.
We then headed to Bunderburg to see turtle hatchlings scrabble their way to the sea in the darkness of night, which was an awesome
experience and really informative.
Whilst in bunderburg we stayed in an old police station/Jail. Our double room was the nut room -a padded cell, which was a little creepy but different.
We are now in the town of 1770, where Captain Cook first landed on Australia. It is a small pretty peninsula with cheap activites. Yesterday we went on a drive on mini harleys and choppers. David had the time of his life and despite falling off (not hurting myself) I enjoyed it too. Tomorrow we are going on a sunset kayak tour around the peninsula and having a go at kayak surfing. Then we are going inland to a cattle farm to have a go at whip cracking, goat herding, mustering and riffle shooting etc ....can't wait!
