Central Mount Stuart
Reputed to be the centre of Australia. May 20, Wednesday. Had breakfast with a fantastic backdrop of Glen Helen Gorge. Took my time leaving, which give me time to charge the video battery. Finally got myself together and headed another 20 kilometres west to Redbank Gorge. A fairly good dirt road until the turn off then it got rough. Another gorge with some interesting rock formations. It was mid-day by time I got back to Alice Springs. Only just making it before running out of petrol. I did run out of clean cloths and was down to my last pair of shorts. Every thing is now being washed. Petrol and temperature gauge working again. Unfortunately the 35mm camera is still not working. Weather overcast but not cold.
May 21, Thursday. Started heading out of town then decided I needed a new 35mm camera. Drove back into town bought a Pentex 35mm SLR. Leaving town by the Sturt Highway, I came across the Telegraph Station that Alice Springs is named after, where I took more shots of the well preserved old building. Noticed I was still getting wrong readings under the lighting conditions, so I headed back into town. Came to the decision the lens was wrong for
the camera so I put it in for a service, hoping that may fix the problem. Decided to drive to Corollary Rock, which is about 42 kilometres east of Alice. After dark I went out to the Todd Tavern and met some interesting people and a good drinking session. Car okay, weather overcast.
May 22, Friday. Spent another day looking around Alice Springs. This time I went out to the Ghan Railway Museum. Interesting but more needs to be done to get it back into a presentable condition. In the afternoon went to Pitchi Richi Sanctuary, which was very good. Showing all the old relics of the past.
Later in the afternoon I went up to Anzac Hill. Allowing me to have a good overall view of this inland city. Finished my sight seeing day by filming as I drove through the streets and noticed there’s a lot of new building going on. Went to pick up my lens, the coupling between the lens and the camera are still giving me a wrong readings. It looks like I will have to buy another lens before I leave town. Went back to the Todd Tavern and did more drinking.
May 23, Saturday.
Bought a 28-80mm zoom lens for the camera. I will try and sell the other lens when I get to Darwin. Left the town of Alice Springs this morning about 9:30. Managed to get away without paying for the service on the 28mm lens. On the way north stopped at Central Mount Stuart. The geographical centre of Australia.
Visited the Devils Marbles where I found the geological feature fascinating but the flies were really bad. Did 530 kilometres before I called it a day and booked into the Tenant Creek caravan park. The car is going great. Weather windy and but still nice.
