Worth getting up for Day 84 Katherine to Daly Waters (Sat 25th Sept)
Up this morning in time to get some pics of the pre-dawn sky which was a beautiful red colour. Heather and I had to be ready to leave at 0645 as we were going for a helicopter flight over the Katherine Gorge. Our pilot was Scott, and he took us up in a little tiny yellow helicopter that looked like a bubble. He explained that while people said there were 13 gorges, there was really just one, but the low water levels meant it was divided into 13 separate pools of water. The flight was about 20 minutes long and well worth it, we even saw some water buffalo and some kayaks on the water.
The others came by in the coach to pick us up at 0730 and we all went down to the visitors centre at the gorge. Some people went kayaking, some went walking and a few of us stayed at the centre enjoying the views with a hot drink. Surprisingly the coffee is really nice despite coming out of a machine...
We left at 1100 and headed for some hot springs where we had our
Katherine Gorge
Amazing views from the helicopter lunch stop. We watched the first half of the footy on the screens at the pub there while some of the group went swimming. Wombat is a Collingwood supporter, but I wanted St Kilda to win (I mean come on - the lesser of two evils...). No-one else really understood what was going on but a few watched anyway.
At half time we set off on our way. We stopped at the Pink Panther pub in Larrimar in time to watch the final quarter with a beer. Well obviously Wombat couldn’t have one as he was driving, but the rest of us did. It was a bit of a stressful last quater and we couldn’t believe the result - a draw!! That means we will likely miss it next week, as next Saturday is our second last driving day and will be a very long one. A little disappointing but oh well.
We then went on our way to Daly Waters which was a very small town. Here we had to put up our own tents although a few elected to just use their swags. I wasn’t sure what the mosquito situation was going to be like, so
Helen and I put up a tent. We just put up the mesh section and didn’t bother with the fly as it clearly wasn’t going to rain here.
Dinner was at the pub (there isn’t really anywhere else in the town, it’s so small) and was really nice. The pub has an intersesting decoration theme running - a 'thong tree' out back (and here I mean thongs - the footware!), and shirts and bra's and shorts hanging in sections all over the eaves and walls with messages on them. Needless to say, our group added a shirt. Classy. We sat around chatting over a few drinks and a couple games of pool and managed to get to bed not long after midnight. It was really nice sleeping so we could see the stars. A very peaceful night.
