Day 48 - Tweed Heads to Tamborine Mountain
Up we get with a couple of different missions in mind this morning, sorting the fridge out and sorting our return flights out! The flight organisation proves real easy, it seems that we have one free of charge change and now that we’ve cancelled the originally booked dates we’re ok to re-book whenever we want to. We need to organise with Mum and Dad Kettle when they’ll be able to get out here and we’re also going to have a chat with the visa people and see if it’s possible for us to go to NZ and then return to Oz before we finally head home. We’ve got a multi entry visa so we’re now thinking that we might change our plans for the final sections of our trip. We’ll do some thinking over the coming weeks and see what we find!
Goal 2 was sorting the fridge out. It’s not worked properly since leaving Willowbank and it seemed to start freezing things just before we left so we turned it down and now it’s stopped working altogether. Strange because we’ve got heat out of the back still so it’s trying to
work. We found a number for a mobile caravan mechanic but it’s Saturday and we don’t get an answer from his phone. We ask around and we’re eventually taken under the wing of a friendly 80 year old fridge expert! After what we tell him he thinks the cooler might have gone but on closer inspection of our camp and around 10 minutes we’ve levelled our caravan and the fridge is working again!!!! Another lesson learned, caravan fridges must be level for them to work at all! We can hear you all roaring with laughter, don’t worry we are too! Thanks for your time Norm and for helping out the Pommies who weren’t level and even set up on the concrete pad which is what the caravan should be parked next too! We don’t have this trouble in free camping!!
Well we had a lovely calm morning sitting at the billabong listening to the birds in the trees having a right old chat whilst watching the cranes wander around the site. We also had the added delight of several Model T Fords on site today, they’re absolutely gorgeous and are here for the weekend on a rally we think!
With a cold fridge we’re on our way to the mountains! We pass the entrances for Sea World and Movie World and then we’re into some very steep climbs to Tamborine Mountain! The views back across to Surfers are spectacular as we near the top, truly awesome so we need to work out which particular mountain track we should clamber up over the next couple of days to get some snaps! We’re in 13 and 15 degree segment climbs now but Pie is pulling up with no problem at all. North is packed full of people and the place reminds of us the Blue Mountains but on a sunny day!! We start to descend the mountain until we reach our home for the next few nights, the Tamborine Caravan and Camping Park. It’s gorgeous, nestled in the trees and we’re met by a friendly smile as is the case for most of these places! We’re on pitch 26 which has it’s own fire pit, level concrete pad and swamp at the bottom! Beautiful! We set up and head into town for some idea of how to get the most out of this gorgeous area. We’re given plenty of info and
we’ve got our itinerary for the next couple of days! Skywalk across the trees, walking in the rainforest, farmers market on Sunday morning, cascades and waterfalls, rock pools and glow worm caves with wine tasting! Sounds like a good couple of days to us!
Back at camp we hunt for firewood and take in the walk along the camps own falls, rock pools and natural plunge pool which is stunning. There are kookaburras all around us and scrub turkeys being mighty brave considering we’ve a fire lit ready! It’s gorgeous, tranquil and right up our street. Darryl is of course on cooking duty, fire building duty and generally takes care of most things one way or another. With a beer in one hand and Kangaroo steaks cooking over the fire the smile is never far from his face! As the night comes in and the light goes, all you can see is camp fires around the various places and all you can here is laughter.
Today’s blog has been named after a house we saw en-route up the mountain, it seems very apt! So it’s good night from us, the wanderers high up in the green on the
gold!
Hope the Summer Nationals are going well and hope to hear from you soon
