Christmas in Sydney
Massive Christmas tree in Queen Victoria Building (shopping heaven!!) Sun 25th Dec - Fri 30th Dec ...not really! This Christmas…quite different from the usual cold wet ones I’m used to...I'm melting!! Managed to get down to Coogee Beach for the afternoon with new buddy, Irish Erika - loveliest girl ever! (gotta write that cuz she might be reading this!) she can sure talk the hind legs off a donkey but that’s the Irish for you! Anyway, having spent the afternoon sunbathing, eating and talking rubbish at Coogee, we headed over to Bondi that evening to meet up with some of Erika’s mates - much to our despair, all the pubs closed early - how can that be we cried…it’s Christmas, they need to stay open cuz we wanted a drink! But seeing as that wasn’t going to happen, we ended up having fish and chips instead, v nice!! We finished our food in time to see all the drunken backpackers spilling out onto the pavement at closing time…resembling Newquay on a bank holiday weekend…nice! We made a sharp exit (ish…we had to wait for a cab!) and back to the hostel to bed…ahh, there goes another Christmas day!
Didn’t get much of a lay-in on Boxing Day as
Christmas on Coogee
Spot the little christmas tree! I was rudely awoken by Susan texting me, telling me to high tail over to Manly so we could see the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race…ok so I was the one who suggested it ages ago, but didn’t realise I had to get up early to go all the way to the other side of the city cuz the ferries stopped crossing the harbour for the race…but it’s obvious when you think about it really! Dur!!
Anyway, managed to get over to Manly with time to spare and went up to North Point for some great views of the yachts before they turned in the ocean to head towards Tassie.
After that, we (Susan, brother John and kids) went to Manly beach…for them to go swimming and me to top up my tan…I have got the best tan ever!!
Ok, so most of you guessed before I started my trip…I’m not a true backpack - as Clarkey and Pui said…I’m more of a flash packer - cheers chicks, you know me so well!! I don’t think I cooked at the hostel at anytime during my stay in Sydney! There are so many good, cheap eats
Dead or Alive?
We think he was still alive!! here that I don’t actually need to cook! I ended up going with Susan and her friend Carrie to Mu Shu in Bondi, this fab Asian fusion restaurant and having the menu degustation (taster menu - about 10 courses of different dishes) - all for about $70, which isn’t bad really!! Although I would like, at some point to try the backpackers $5 steak! Everyone says it tastes good! (although I so have my doubts!)
We went back to Carries apartment for a cuppa - what an amazing apartment - wooden floors, open plan kitchen, dining room, lounge - in fact it’s my dream apartment…if you can ignore a couple of rogue cockroaches!...which terrify - and they sense my fear. Carrie already caught one of them and chucked it out, but I think it’s mate decided to take revenge on me…it ran under the sofa I was on, so I spent most of the night teetering on the edge with my feet off the floor - anyway, had a lapse moment and sat back on the sofa and I’d say about 10 seconds later…I’ve never jumped so high or squealed so loudly (also causing Carrie and Susan to jump
and squeal!)…the evil cockroach had crawled up the wall and waited till I sat back into the sofa and then nipped me on the back with its creepy claws! And trust me…it’s got nasty nippers!
I’m not exaggerating (well, maybe a little for effect) but I’m sure I could hear it sniggering at me! After that incident, Susan bundled me into her car and took me home - I think she was slightly embarrassed by the squealing thing and roach phobia!!
