Greetings all from Australia. Apologies again for the delay of this entry; my journey just keeps getting busier and busier... I thought this was supposed to be a relaxing and stress free trip! Still having an awesome time though.
The day after the boat ride, I went rock climbing with a girl from my group. It was a shame no one else came, because it was an amazing climbing session. It was quite busy, so we only got three climbs in, but they were really good. The last one i did started with an over-hang, showed in the picture. It was tough, but a great climb none-the-less.
The next day we were up at 6 because we had a long day of travelling; we were crossing the boarder into Malaysia. We arrived at out hotel in Penang at about 4 in the afternoon. We all went out for dinner at a local Indian restaurant as a group, and then split up for the evening. A bunch of us tried to go clubbing, but because it was Chinese New Year that night, the clubs were charging high entry fees, so we just went to a bar instead. The next day
some of us went up 'Penang Hill', a hill the funnily enough looks over Penang. The views from the top were incredible, and a few of us had dinner over looking the city, and were graced by a thunder storm over the panorama. In the evening, the group went to the biggest Buddhist temple in Malaysia (and probably the most colourful to).
The following day, we were graced by another long bus ride up into the Cameroon Highlands. Most of us felt this was a slightly wasted destination, only because of the fact that it was a lot of travelling for only one night. The place itself was stunning, but for a 6 hour bus ride, a one nights stay, and then another 7 hour bus ride... we didn't feel it was worth it. The four lads of the trip, however, didn't waste an opportunity to hit the bars (or Bar in this case). The group went out for dinner, where a few of us tried a local ''steamboat'' (which consists of 25 ingredients, 3 broths and a stove/cooker on the table, and you sort of cook what you want, when you want). And then the four of us
proceeded to the bar of the town until 3.30am.
The next day, we spent another journey on a coach (quite a regular thing in Malaysia) to Kuala Lumpur, the capital. We stayed in quite a nice hotel, right in the middle of Chinatown. Once again, we tried to go clubbing, but this time all the clubs were over 21s, so us youngsters had to get an early night. A group of us spent the next day in the largest mall I have ever been in; eleven stories of shopping, bowling complex, normal and Imax cinema, indoor theme park, hotel, swimming complex and two story food court. It was a fun day out. After, we went to a tattoo parlour, because one girl wanted to get a tongue piercing and one girl and one guy wanted a tattoo. I very nearly got a tribal tattoo on my arm... but thought better of it. That night was yet another bar crawl and late night.
Our last full day in Malaysia started with a trip down to Melaka, a very historical town with a mix of cultural areas. We stayed in a very pleasant, but very rustic guest house. We spent
the day in a local mall, and the evening listening to music in the garden with my newly purchased iPod speakers, and reflecting on a trip as it was our penultimate night together as a group.
Our final official day together began with a reasonably short trip over the boarder into Singapore. That afternoon/evening turned out to be one of the best on the trip. It started with cocktails at 5 at one of the nicest hotels in the city, it not the world, 'Raffles' (I had to buy shoes especially for the event). It was in this 100 year old hotel that the 'Singapore Sling' cocktail was conceived, and of which I had a couple. We then had dinner at a very nice Chinese restaurant, before heading to a bar on the waterfront where, because it was Friday, it was serving free champagne to ladies. Doesn't sound fair to me either, but of course the guys got slipped a few each. So after proceeding to get slightly (or extremely) drunk, we found ourselves in the biggest Ministry of Sound nightclub.... in the world! And I loved every second of it. Had a really good night.
And that
brings me to about now, really. The next day I got my flight from Singapore to Sydney... where it is raining! Which I am not happy about, because it is supposed to be their summer. I'm just waiting now until Friday when I head up the east coast to hit those surfing beaches.
Best wishes everyone.
