The 'Coathanger'
Big famous bridge... Hello all!! No, I haven’t migrated to New Zealand, we are in Australia but have been so busy we both have been struggling to post blogs…but at last I bring you the first bits of my aussie trip.
Right, we had a hostel booked for Sydney…which was a bit of a stab in the dark as we had no real idea of where to stay…..and it turned out to be a quirky little place….we had a good time there but I think they will remember Fran for a long time due to something that occurred after a few too many shandy’s, I’ll let her tell the story in her blog, don’t wanna spoil it! Quite funny..!
Anyway, as with most cities we have flown into to we didn’t do that much in Sydney! How lazy, we come all this way and we hardly do any sightseeing, criminal. We did a bit, the night we arrived I was a little excited to be in Australia and Sydney in particular and I dragged Fran down to the opera house and the harbour bridge which are awesome to see in the flesh after so long at seeing them on TV or in
films. Took lots of picture of these two icons but the weather wasn’t too great and so the grey sky is annoying but its all good. Went on a tour of the opera house which was really interesting and wasn’t as sleep-inducing as I thought it may be, we also went to a performance in the theatre which was a powerful play on an Australian prisoner at Guantanamo Bay.
We didn’t even get the ferry to Manly….or go to the beach at Bondi! How rude of us. Well, we are there in the new year so we knew we could do it all when we came back. We went up the tower in the middle of town though, that was impressive but what wasn’t impressive was the ancient lift that was sooooooooooooo slow it actually made you want to cry with pain. Did a bit of shopping, loads of good shops….and spent some time up Kings Cross which really isn’t that sleazy and as bad a people say….if you’ve ever been to Amsterdam then it won’t even turn your head. We had a little look around, soaked up the atmosphere coming from the very random mix of people on
the street, then as with most nights on our stay in Sydney went to my uni mates flat. Titley…cheers for the hospitality!!! We went out on the town one night while we were there and got messy, very messy.
We met a guy in Canada called Nathan, an aussie guy, who we got on really well with and who offered us a place to stay if we were ever in his neck of the woods and he lived just outside of Sydney so we called him up and invited ourselves over to stay at his! Nath was a fantastic host, we had our first authentic aussie BBQ…went to a pub/club (another stupidly messy nite, black sambucca…awesome), had a roast dinner at Nath’s girlfriend (now fiancé, congrats you two!) Rochelle’s house with her family which was really nice! All in all a great week was spent at Nathan’s place, hello to Carson, still surgically attached to the Xbox?! We also went to to the Blue Mountains and did a couple of trails and saw the 3 Sisters. That was a good trip, the national park there is stunning and defo worth a day trip.
Next up was Byron Bay
and Nimbin, quality. We didn’t have long at Byron Bay or at many of our stops up the east coast due to our tight time restrictions and this place was definitely one place I wished we could have stayed longer. It was so chilled out here, many a lazy day could have been had here. The beach was gorgeous and we spent the first morning we were there (just spent twelve hours on the greyhound, which are better than the American ones…not as busy, so we wanted to walk for a bit!) exploring the beach and a couple of good lookouts. Saw surfers in Australia for the first time….how sad!!! I even got excited when I first saw Neighbours in Australia…I know….how does Fran put up with me. No idea.
The day after we arrived in Byron Bay we had a trip to the hippy town of Nimbin booked….which we had heard a lot about and were excited and intrigued to see what all the fuss was about. The tour was run by a guy called Jim who runs an excellent day trip, you get a couple of hours at the town (believe me, that’s all you will need…!)
Me and the bridge
It was overcast the day we were there so it looks a bit grey, annoying a stop at a waterfall and the highlight for me….a visit to a hippy called Paul who bought 80 acres of land and transformed half of it into a temperate rainforest and half into a tropical forest. This guy was a dude, he had loads to say about stuff and his bong was passed around…! Sweet as. The thing with Nimbin is that cannabis is freely and openly sold on the streets along with ladies selling hash and weed cakes, cookies etc. Funny day, awesome little place….look at the shop frontages on the photos! The police say that they know what goes on but choose to ignore it, fine with me. The music Jim plays on his tour bus is fantastic also.
Next stop was Surfers Paradise, then Noosa and Rainbow beach….will get that one done as quickly as I can!
We are both in Perth at the moment and loving it, watching the cricket when it is on which annoys loads of people at the hostel because apparently cricket is boring…?! Unlucky. Enjoying the weather which is hot, too hot today…well you have to remember I have a ginger mop. Not loving Spurs losing to Arsenal, thanks
for the texts boys…! We both have jobs…as domestic house cleaners…! Pays ok so its all good, don’t like being spoken down to though sometimes. Also I’m working at the hostel we are staying at, well good fun and it lowers my rent as well…have to check people in, make some beds show people around etc….I’m writing this on my shift tonight….!
Right, hello to everyone who reads this….hope you are all well and making love not war. Peace and love.
