Edit Blog Post
Hi All, just a brief update of all we've been up to since the last entry - well actually a nice excuse to put up the much promised video of our apartment.
Well the ink wasn't even dry on my last blog before I got a call from my boss giving me the old heave ho. As you can probably tell from my last entry I was not overly upset about this turn of events and actually it has worked out quite well for me. When we first arrived I was really hoping to get a job in Management Consultancy. When we registered with different recruitment agencies I made this wish expressly clear and they expressly ignored this. As is the way with these agencies they will charm you whilst trying to push you into the jobs that they want you to do and not the ones you may actually have an interest in. The offer of filing and data entry jobs was not too tempting so I ended up doing labouring jobs instead - more money although still none too interesting.
After 4-5 weeks of filing and data entry offers I'd resigned myself to just getting on with labouring. But
Maeve 2040
What Maeve may look like in 32 years time, nice dress Baby!!!!! when the work dried up, on the post polishing front, the boss (rightfully) didn't fancy the prospect of paying me to do nothing. I was out on my ear looking for work again. The next morning, Friday, I really couldn't get too motivated about applying for jobs I really couldn't get excited about. There are plenty of labouring and temping job at the moment so there was no panic on getting a job straight away. By lunchtime I made an executive decision. As there are plenty of jobs available I didn't need to rush into starting another job I didn't really want to do. I decided to take a week off and really concentrate on getting a job in management consultancy, if after a week nothing came of it I could honestly say I'd exhausted every avenue and I'd resign myself to taking the first job I'd come across the following monday morning. I made my mind up and forgot about job hunting for the rest of that week.
I then proceeded to meet up with Maeve and Aidan in PJ O'Briens pub and we had a great session, which ended up with me on my knees 'praying' to the toilet. Apart from that we had a great time and all parties involved were feeling a bit ropey the next day. That was the day we sprawled out in the Botanical gardens recovering, it was the most physically demanding activity we could muster for the entire day. That night we went to Darling Harbour to watch the last night of fireworks - as you can probably tell these pictures are already up on the previous blog. On Sunday Maeve and myself headed off to the beach for the Coogee to Bondi walk which was really nice, the day was perfect.
Then last Monday I set about trying to get myself a job I'd actually be excited about getting out of bed for. I tidied up my CV, wrote a nice/compelling letter of introduction and visited Googleland for the afternoon trying to find suitable Management Consultancies to write to. By 5pm I had sent a few e-mails and went home quite happy. On Tuesday I sent a few more to sonsultancies and the set about looking up recruitment agencies who deal with management consultants. Having sent those off there was othing to do but sit and wait, not something I'm really great at. By wednesday night there were still no leads and Maeve and myself headed off to the trinity Bar in Surry Hills to meet up with Emer, Kevin and 28 year old birthday boy Aidan for a bit of a celebration. A good night, not too hectic especially compared to the previous fridays standards, but a good night in a good pub none the less.
Thursday morning, I went off to Potts Point for a haircut - long, annoying locks and messy hair I can put up with but Maeve teasing me about it I can't. About 2 minutes into the haircut with a half shaven head my phone started ringing. Normally I'd have ignored it but just on the off chance I said I better answer it. The barber was not impressed as I jumped out of the chair and out to the street to answer the phone, head half shaven. It was worth the strange looks though, a call from a management consultant company looking to meet up with me for a coffee and a chat.
That evening I set off on a spree, to get some businessy clothes and a nice pair of shoes. I was thinking something smart-cas. Upon maeve's advice (- i.e. don't even think of buying anything with out some professional opinion), I asked a really helpful lady about my choice of shirt, she enquired what the ocasion was and looked right down her nose at my choice of casual trousers. It quickly registered with me that by the look of disgust on her face they were too casual. In fairness she did a great job of pointing me towards the right people in the shop. She said that she was a manager at the store and was used to interviewing people for jobs and assured me I needed to look much more smart and a lot less casual. I was looking pretty Dapper by the time she was finished with me and she assured me I'd get the job.
That night we went off en masse to see Des Bishop in the Gaelic Club in Surry Hills. He was really good, a lot better than I thought although still struggles to deal with people in the crowd, a bit.
So at 10.30 friday I met up with the director of the company for a cup of coffee. We had a good chat, about my background and experience, he told me about the background of the company, told me of the exciting projects coming up for the company. In all the coffee lasted over 2 hours and by the end he offered me a job with the company. I didn't hesitate in accepting and will hopefully be starting in 2 or 3 weeks time. If you want something done - don't rely on useless recruitment consultants to do it for you, filing my arse!!!!!!!!
I went home in the sunshine, smiling, with a folder full of info I need to study before the first project starts and much better wages that I'd been making since we arrived in Sydney.
We had a great weekend, even though for the first Friday since we arrived we didn't go out drinikng. Not being wrecked and a tad hungover on a Saturday morning was a new experience for us. We made the most of it by having an early jog/walk and packing up a picinc and heading off to Coogee beach for a day of sun worship. That night we had a very nice soiree at Kevin and Emers and got home by 4am.
I hope you enjoy the video's, till next time.
