RoyalRebel - John Lawlor and Maeve Cotter

John Lawlor and Maeve Cotter Maeve and I are embarking on a once in a lifetime trip around the world and you can join us on our trip, online of course, plenty of psychos out there you know. Both being Irish and from proper big Catholic families (7 Maeve and 8 John, as well as 6 neices and nephews between us) not to mention all the inlaws, outlaws, relations, friends, neighbours and all the rest, we decided a travel Blog is the best way to keep everybody up to speed and excrusiatingly jealous of our trip. We promise to try our best to keep ye up to date and informed on a regular basis with as many stories, pictures and hopefully some videos so that ye can see what we'll be getting up to.

Hi All, Well as you can tell we´ve moved on to a new country and continent. Chile is a very interesting country and well worth the week we stayed there. Ask most people who´ve been to Santiago and they´ll tell you to get out of there ASAP. It´s not nice, aparently, fellow bloggers and travellers generally tent to hate it. We however found it a really cool place that has it´s own way of doing things. It really reminds me of an eastern European city with a strange and ugly mix of gorgeous colonial magnifigance and then plenty of concrete block [View Full Entry]

Hi All, Well I'm really on a charge now and the blog might actually be up to date for once. 4 blogs in 1 day is a lot of work but I'll be glad when it's done. Maeve's done sterling work on the last 2 Australian blogs. Great support there, having written 2 out of the 35 entries so far. I think she may have a bit of catching up to do. We arrived in Wellington from the Interislander ferry. We stayed in Wellington for 4 days and it was quite a nice stay. Wellington is an alright city, not too [View Full Entry]

So after 3 attempts we actually got to do our Skydiving. It was amazing and where better to do it than Lake Taupo and on yet another sunny day. We decided to do the 12,000ft dive, you freefall 7,000 feet in 30 seconds and the 5,000 feet in 5 minutes with the parachute. Beforehand Maeve was quite nervous and was thinking of all kinds of ways of getting out of it. When we got to the airport we were busy signing our lives away, getting kitted out and such. I had expected that we'd have to sit through a long boring [View Full Entry]

Then we moved on to Adrenaline heaven - Queenstown. We had tried to do a skydive over Lake Wanaka on the way down to Queenstown it would have been very impressive especially with Mount Cook in the background but alas the weather was too windy and too dangerous. On to Queenstown. We happened to mention to our driver the hostel we had booked in Queenstown and he was horrified. It was the highest rated hostel in the BBH guide for Queenstown so we assumed it was a safe bet. The driver warned us away from the place. We didn't know who [View Full Entry]

Hi All, Well thankfully we've moved on from the heat and sweat of our camper van to the cooler and very sunny and astonishinly gorgeous South Island of New Zealand. This is by far the best country we've been to so far. When we were flying over from Sydney to Christchurch the views were amazing. Clear blue skies, clean turquoisish ocean, the southern Alps, green fields and then the Canterbury plains. We got into our hostel in Christchurch in no time and it was very nice (Old Country House). The weather was just perfect 22C, blue skies and a nice relief [View Full Entry]

Maeve and John take on the East Coast: Take 2..... On our first night in the new van we stayed in Noosa - a really nice beachside town. Got in late enough so just had something to eat and went to sleep....successfully this time (my wonderful hunter gatherer acquired a fan in the van shop so we were to be a lot more comfortable at night from now on!). The next morning we pulled up to a picnic bench overlooking the beach and had our breakfast in the sunshine looking at lovely turquoise water. Finally things were as they should be! Last night in Sydney

Hi All, so we (i.e. John) haven't updated the blog in a long while and the pressure of it all is getting to John, so in a show of true partnership and support I am going to flex my literary muscles and tackle my inaugural blog (I'm about as excited as getting an English essay for homework in your last class of the day on a Friday afternoon but sure I'll give it a lash anyway). We're in New Zealand's North Island at the moment and we (well John) hasn't updated the blog since Sydney so I'll bring you up to [View Full Entry]

Well All the time has come for us to pack up and move on to the 3rd leg of our trip. We're esentially now heading home. I've been organinsing or at least trying to since I got back to Melbourne. We're flying up to Cairns on Tuesday then taking 3 1/2 weeks to drive in our campervan back down to Sydney. We've booked a 3 day and 3 night sailing trip to the Whitsunday islands and what looks like a really luxurious yacht. Maeve has been dreaming of going sailing since we started planning the trip and considering I talked her [View Full Entry]

So off to Melbourne we went. Peters' brother Mick and his Fiancee Stephanie live on the coast south of Geelong which is south of Melbourne. They rented a house for the family in Ocean Grove and rented a minibus/car for us. They picked us up from the airport and brought us straight to our door. It was a lovely big spacious house which was just a short stroll to the ocean and a lovely big beach. That evening we had a nice BBQ and Mick and Stephanie came bearing Micks' Home-Brewed Cider. I'm not a cider drinker at all, but this [View Full Entry]

It was with great delight and excitement that Maeve and I headed off to the airport to collect my Dad, Sister Fiona, her Husband Peter and their three children; Sean, Catherine and Kieran. We were amazed at how well all had endured the 34 hours of traveling especially the kids. They were much fresher than any of the ‘oldies.’ Once we collected everybody we got a taxi back to Paddington where we had rented a house for them. After a quick tour of the house the parents retired for the night and Maeve and I brought the 3 kids to the [View Full Entry]
