Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

An early landing on a crisp Sydney morning that hints at the arrival of autumn, a fact that is confirmed as we look out from our balcony at home to see yellowing leaves and already bare trees. How different from the scene one month ago when we left, and a sharp counterpoint to the green leafiness of the northern spring we’ve just experienced during our travels. These signs of growth and decline spark a recollection in me of some lines from Wallace Stevens’ poem “The Comedian as the letter C” …. What was the purpose of his pilgrimage, Whatever shape it [View Full Entry]

It's Easter Sunday and we are moving toward tomorrow morning's departure for Rome when there will be only 36 hours of delightful :-[ air travel between our familiar cityscape outlook and a whole new view in the Eternal City. Probably somewhere between Hong Kong and Zurich the only thing that will feel eternal is the plane flight. Ahh the tyranny of distance so familiar to many travelling Australians, although on the upside it is always a great rationale for staying at the trip's destination for as long as possible. Or at least this is the excuse that we use. At the [View Full Entry]

Best hint for Sydney - buy the Travel Pass. We walked to central station this morning and bought a seven day travel pass that is good for the trains within the immediate city zone, all of the buses, and unlimited rides on most of the ferries. They say one thing you have to do in Sydney is take one of those ridiculously expensive harbour cruises. The ferries provide the same experience but at about $5 a day. We certainly made the most of it on the first day with several train rides, a bus ride, and 3 ferry rides. The first [View Full Entry]

The Sydney Star After a long flight to Sydney, with some of the worst entertainment United has to offer, we arrived early in the morning on our first day in Sydney. After going through immigration and customs, getting Eric’s bag, and going through “quarantine” - where I was luckily able to keep my granola bars and starburst, we left for our first hostel experience. Many of you have asked about where we are staying during the trip. Because Eric and I have spent the last several years of our lives spoiled by both work and personal travel with upgrades, United [View Full Entry]

Hi All, not only is 'November Rain' a great song but it's a pretty good description of this November in Sydney. Cool (-ish), Cloudy and stormy. All of the things I wasn't expecting in Sydney in November (May in Irish months). The month has passed by so quickly that it's kind of hard to remember all that we managed to do. I know we got to see plenty of stormy weather and watch the spectacles that are Sydney Lightning storms - really nice to see, really wet to get caugh up in. I think we even managed to have a quiet [View Full Entry]

I 'walked' into a door

Just another party review. This time about really good music (again). Saying again I feel tempted to say that the scene for core music is really productive here even though it seems to be a quarter of the size of the one found at home. But once infiltrated it presents itself as having a bunch of really good artists. And what is more is that the sounds do not sound like a copy, on the contrary, they are very original most of the time. The venue this time is called Hermann's Bar - a small bar/club on the corner of Sydney [View Full Entry]

Hi All, I suppose it's time for an update. We've been quite busy since we got back from the Blue Mountains which must be nearly 4 weeks ago now. Tommorrow we're off again this time to Melbourne for the International Rules match on Friday and the start of the horse races on Saturday. It promises to be really good craic. Since the Blue mountains Maeve has been off to Tasmania and Canberra. She and Emer had lunch with the Irish Ambassador. At the Des Bishop show Maeve, Emer and Laura were snapped by the Irish Echo and their picture was published. [View Full Entry]
