Lo all from OZ
Well, not a lot to report today, as we spent much of it driving. Our day started off in Port Macquarie where we got up, checked out of our site, and went to a restaurant called the pancake place for breakfast. I’m not sure what our waitress’s problem was but she was a mega B! The food was so-so, definitely not up to the same standards which we’ve been used to having here lately. But the service…man it sucked.
After that we got in the RV and went down to the koala hospital. This is a place that’s privately funded whose sole purpose is to rescue and rehab, and ultimately set free koalas. The threats to these cute little guys are mostly caused by humans. Sometimes they’re hit by cars, some are attacked by dogs, and their habitat is being destroyed for housing. I think of all the stories I read about there (and there were tons) the saddest ones are about koala’s getting burnt in bush fires. These poor little guys come into the hospital, with second and third degree burns to much of their bodies. There was one particular
fire that killed 38 koala’s of 40 koala’s in one area, with the 2 that survived being treated, and now permanent residents at the hospital, not being deemed fit to survive in the wild now. Some of the stories touched us so much the kids insisted on us adopting a koala, so we did, and we’re now the proud adopt ties of Cathie Vikki; a koala that was abandoned by her mother when she was 800 grams, who’s now fully healthy and released in the wild.
After the zoo we’re on the road again, headed north. Not really a lot to report here except driving, we drove until 5 or so, stopping in a little town outside of Byron Bay. The restaurant’s food was very good (Italian restaurant) but again, we got shafted big-time on the service. Needless to say nobody got any tips today. After that we got to our campsite just after 7 pm, with check in closed. The owner of the site said just go to a spot, and we’ll fix things up in the morning. Gotta like that! Byron Bay is really known for surfing, as I write this I can hear the surf hitting the beach (we’re only 100 feet from the beach.) I’m sure Wes is gonna be at us big-time to go play in the surf tomorrow morning.
One thing I haven’t written about is the stars, holy mackerel there’s a lot, and it’s completely different than the northern hemisphere… so incredible. When I get a chance I’ll get Jason to take a picture with the tripod.
That’s it for today… more tomorrow!
