Tennessee: Memphis: Graceland
The unimposing entrance. We have arrived and expectation is there - what will we see? May 16-18: Graceland: I arrived at Graceland with a feeling of expectation and moving through the rooms where he lived was quite something but I still cannot believe how emotional I felt when viewing some of the rooms displaying his awards. Although a fan of Elvis, I have never followed every move (pun) and was absolutely overwhelmed at what was on show regarding his achievements and awards. I literally stood in awe with tears in my eyes, even now just thinking about it – one truly amazing and talented person he was. Words and photos do not to justice to the man. If you ever have the opportunity - go to Graceland.
Walking about Memphis to the Peabody Hotel to see the Peabody ducks and along Beale Street - taking in sights and sounds of the city - on to the pyramid that houses a Lodge style accommodation above an enormous wilderness shopping centre of camping equipment, clothing, toys etc. etc. that was worthwhile to visit.
May 18th: we flew out of Memphis to New York via Chicago where we had a brief stop or so we thought so I made a quick call to Ed who had met
on our tour of Spain in 2009. we had landed a few minutes late so were rushed through to the next flight to learn there were storms all around New York so flights were delayed 1 - 1½ hours. we made it out to the tarmac and waited an hour then went back to the gate and delayed for a short time then back to the tarmac where we waited almost 2 hours for the all clear (at 6-30pm instead of 12.15pm) eventually arriving in New York at 9.30pm. We were met at the hotel by Jeanne and Martijn, Lidwinas rellies from Holland.
May 19 - 22: New York: We had a new York Pass + a VIP pass that let us jump the queue at times to get onto the bus and into venues. We did the Uptown and Downtown routes on the Hop on/off bus to see New York. We visted the Empire State Building taking in the "Sky Ride" then up to admire the view; took a ferry ride around - under the Brooklyn and Washington Bridges, sited a few more and went past the Statue of Liberty to see hundreds of people waiting to come
back on ferries.
On the Night bus going over to Brooklyn we could look back at the city with all the lights shining bright - so very lovely. It was a clear freezing cold night so we were wrapped up in jumpers and coats and jackets and plastic ponchos to try and keep warm. We had a bike ride (someone else pedaling) through Central Park and then a horse drawn carriage ride - very pleasant; a visit to the 9/11 Memorial site, a visit to Madame Tussauds and a move to another hotel in preparation for a Trafalgar tour. We walked miles and miles as it was faster to get from one place to another than by public transport.
