Hello Everyone! Since my last post I have a done a ton (!) of traveling. After leaving New Hampshire, Lilly and I spent some time in Rhode Island and then Halloween weekend in Boston visiting friends. Lilly went back to NYC on the 2nd and I spent a couple of days in Hamilton visiting the Grays. That weekend I went to New York City to visit friends and had a great time. Some highlights were: Citizens Brigade Comedy show and the Flatiron district at night with Theo, INCREDIBLE hot chocolate at City Bakery with Nikki (thanks Lilly!), $5 finds in Chinatown, dinner with friends and drinks at my cousins Jenny & Niall’s new wine bar, Ardesia!
From New York, I drove to southern Delaware to visit Emily and Brad for a few days, which we spent hanging out, cooking and baking (mmm banana bread). While I love my friends who live in Delaware, Delaware itself is a strange place and I think they’ll agree with me. Lots of cookie-cutter homes in pre-made neighborhoods, fields, Walmarts and factories. Right down the road from Emily’s house is the SeaWatch seafood factory, and not much farther is the Perdue chicken factory. Even in northern
Delaware, where Aleah lives, most of the neighborhoods I saw were filled with generic houses and surrounded by strip malls. Who designed Delaware?
I spent my birthday in Philadelphia checking out the sites and eating Philly cheesesteaks. The traditional Philly Cheesesteak is one ordered with Cheez-Whiz and onions, which sounds kind of gross at first, but was actually delicious. I had my first cheesesteak at Campo’s on Market street, a quiet no-fuss eatery in Center City. The second cheesesteak was eaten on Saturday at Jim’s at 4th and South Street, and that was an experience in itself. The line wrapped around the block and once you got inside you could watch the staff throw together the cheesesteaks at lightening speed, moving the line along fairly fast considering the hoards of people. Friday night my friend Annie came into the city and bought me dinner, and when I arrived at Aleah’s house in Newark, DE later that evening, she and her boyfriend Mike surprised me with an icecream cake! Rose even sent my birthday present all the way to Delaware. I am truly grateful for my excellent friends, no matter where I go. We spent Saturday in Philadelphia running up
the Rocky steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and posing with the statue of Rocky, because, well, how can you not? I wasn’t sure what to expect from Philly but at the end of it all, I really enjoyed it. It was a fun city with a good vibe. Almost like a cross between New York and Boston as far as size goes, but with white people as the minorities and more US history sites than you can handle. Everyone I met was nice, the city was definitely walkable, there seemed to be a good night life, and the city’s individual and culturally diverse neighborhoods give it a vibrant, eclectic feel.
The 15th I drove to Chapel Hill and spent a relaxing, but more or less uneventful day and a half there, while I stayed with Chioma and Oge, friends of Nikki’s from college. The city and area surrounding Chapel Hill seems to be dominated by students at UNC and the whole life of the city seems to revolve around the college. All the stores and restaurants catered to UNC students, staff and athletes. Having not gone to a college with a big athletic following, it was fun to
see so much enthusiasm behind a college’s athletes and teams.
On my drive to Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach, FL I saw a rainbow that made a complete circle around the sun. A perfect circle, all the way around the sun! The most incredible thing! It hadn’t rained that day, it wasn’t cloudy and it was about noon, so it didn’t seem like there was much reason for it, but there it was in all its glory distracting me from the road. Has anyone seen a circle rainbow before? I’d love to hear about it because it totally blew my mind.
I spent two days in Amelia Island, FL (just outside of Jacksonville) with family friends, Greg and Geri, who used to live in RI down the road from where I grew up. I had a blast staying with them and was very well fed and entertained! Geri and I spent Wednesday doing yoga, biking around the island and swimming at the beach. Greg and Geri are thinking of opening a hostel somewhere in the United States, probably near a national park or attraction such as one of the parks in Utah or somewhere in the White Mountains in New Hampshire, for

They are still in the researching stages of the project, and if anyone has any suggestions for great places that could use a hostel, please post it, as they are open to any information they can get at this point. I’m really rooting for them and can’t wait to see what they come up with.
Two weeks of traveling and visiting friends was great, but it was a bit of a relief to arrive in Miami and settle down somewhere, for a little while at least. I arrived in Miami on Thursday, at Nature’s Acre tropical fruit farm. I’m still getting settled and meeting the other wwoofers, but so far, so good and I’ll post more about it soon. xoxox.
