We decided to go to Sonoma County, as people tend to say Napa is more overpriced and Sonoma is just as picturesque. We stopped at one winery on our way into central Sonoma. They were a newish winery, only 3 years old or so and really friendly. Our pourer explained everything about what we were tasting. We then headed into main Sonoma to pick up a winery map, I love Sonoma stickers, and get some ideas of where to go. The woman at the info center recommended two free wineries near Viansa, an Italian winery Katy is mildly obsessed with. We set off, did tasting for the next few hours with only half a chai latte from Reno in our stomachs. We bought one bottle of red from Viansa with the idea of drinking it that night and then picked up some bread, chicken, and cheese from a nearby grocery store. Then, our hunt for accommodation began. To put a long story, with the almost beginnings of a fight, short, we drove around for quite awhile without an reception on our cell phone or gps and ended up in a hostel at Point Reyes in the forest with separate mens and
womens dorms. The hostel itself was quite nice...a really "green" atmosphere with a small, but friendly crowd of people all traveling around for different reasons. We met a couple of guys riding bikes for all of route 1 from start to finish and a woman who has been on the road now for 9 months traveling from Australia. Needless to say, we didnt enjoy the wine, but had a good nights rest ready to start out in the morning for San Francisco.
After some fair trade coffee and sandwiches in the morning we set out, watching Highway 1 unwind picturesquely in front of us. The roads down from Point Reyes were winding...we stopped a number of times to take photos before making our way down to Sausalito, getting out quickly as Katy was carsick and began throwing up. We walked along the pier, waiting for the restaurant FISH to open, as Katy had been there before and was all about the crab sandwich. Finally, around 11 the restaurant opened...we split a crab sandwich overlooking the ocean then headed out to San Francisco. On our way there, Katy's phone died and charger stopped working so our first stops were looking
at a couple of places to stay for the night and a Verizon store. After driving up and down one way streets over and over, we finally got to a Verizon store, got a new phone and charger, and then to a hostel at the end of North Beach (the Italian district) where we booked a private room for the night. The hostel receives a number of international tourists and therefore has a lot of activities to acquaint people to the city. That night, they were having a bar hop tour in the Marina district. We parked the car, getting incredibly lucky and securing a spot on a free parking all the time street near our hostel, and then took a long walk along the piers nearby, stopping to look at shops and sealions and a quick beer between Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 (, and finally Ghiradelli Square where we split an icecream before hurrying back through the rest of North Beach to our hostel in time for the pub crawl. We left around 8:30 with a group, and ended up on the same street that Katy had lived 2 summers before, went to 2 bars and secured deals, and
finished the night ruling a table of beer pong at Bar None on Union Street. We decided not to go to the last bar and got on the Muni to head back to the hostel instead, falling asleep soon after.
