Quack! We're up high! So on Friday, December 1st, I wandered around downtown Denver. I actually went into the
Art Museum, which turned out to be pretty cool. The architecture of the building is really neat, and the artwork inside was nicely laid out and arranged. And it was a nice blend of different art styles, with something for everyone. However, I was highly annoyed by people on cell phones. I was always under the assumption that museums are places to be quiet, as everyone wants to enjoy the art in their own way....
Saturday we drove up to Garden of the Gods. The plan was to do a tour of the Gardens, then head to the Pikes Peak
Cog Rail to go up
Pikes Peak. However, it was rather snowy. And visibility was, well, non-existant.
So after waiting a few hours and watching a short video on the formation of the Garden of the Gods, we decided to give up and drive around in search of Plan B. We ended up in the town of
Manitou Springs, which is a town that can most aptly be described as
cute.
There we saw the
Miramont Castle. The castle was located on a hill surrounded by cute Victorian-style houses.
Museum reflections
Outside the Art Museum The basement of the castle was filled with miniatures and doll houses designed to look like historic buildings of the Pikes Peak area. The rest of the castle was reconstructed to look like it might have been in the late 1800s when it was built by a French aristocrat. We then went to the Queen's Tea Parlour in the castle for a Victorian-style tea, complete with fresh, warm apricot scones, tea sandwiches and delightful chocolates for dessert.
Sunday was a drive up to Bolder, CO, for some shopping. After having decent coffee at Peaberry's (it's too bad that Starbucks and other big chains are forcing these smaller, better coffee shops out of business! I'm making it a pact to buy only from smaller shops on this trip), we wandered in and out of cute shops and did some Christmas shopping. Then it was off to the
Tea House, which is a Tajik teahouse with beautiful interior and exterior details and a wide selection of fine teas. I would recommend not getting appetizers if you want to taste the tea, as the flavours of the appetizers drown out the subtle flavours and aromas of the teas. But the food is wicked.
Art Museum, Inside
I felt like I was inside a spaceship! Cool! Mmmm.
Monday was, well, a bit of a surprise, as Sarah's neighbour gave me a mountain day tour. We drove up to Brekenridge, a ski town, and had a very late lunch...which resulted in a rush to the airport and me not having the chance to see Sarah all day. It was an absolutely beautiful ride through the mountains, with lots of photos taken, but I did miss spending the last day with one of my closest friends. I guess that just means I'll have to spend plenty of time in Denver when I go back to North America! And perhaps we'll actually be able to see Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak next time!
Thanks Sarah for an awesome time! Miss you!!!!!
