So, apparently in Scotland (or somewhere in the UK), there’s a tradition that leap day is the only day women are allowed to propose marriage to men (Kyle told me a few weeks ago). That said, we are 5 women with 1 Irishman, today will be interesting. A few days ago, at Wal-Mart, we started conspiring and bought some St. Patty’s Day rings. Last night, he mentioned this to us all again, I guess, I was sleeping.
So, this morning, I went and picked out a ring from our selection, and I started the day off with a marriage proposal. Took my things out to the van, and headed towards the truck where Kyle was. I opened his door, and he was working on his computer, and he smiled and said, “Hello Honey.” I almost lost it then and there, it was so funny. “Speaking of which, I have a few questions. Would you walk with me?” I set it up as something really serious. As we walked back towards the van, I put it off as long as possible. “First question- can I treat you to dinner tonight?” [This was the plan, that we’d each propose and ask him
to dinner.] “We can go to dinner, but I don’t think you can treat me.” “And my other question Kyle, will you marry me?” A huge grin came across his face and he gave me a big hug. “Where did you get something like this?” as he looked at the leprechaun ring on his pinkie.
Apparently he showed Anne and told her I’d proposed, and he showed off his ring. Anne ask him when the date was. “Umm, yesterday.” Which, I must say, that if it was yesterday, I DID NOT enjoy last night as I should have! Anne replied with, “I’m so happy to be a part of this special day.” Good times. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the stories from the other ladies.
4 hour drive to our next stop. Through Austin, which is cool. We went to this great little BBQ spot for lunch. When Kyle and Rachel finally joined us, he told us that he was now engaged to two women- myself and Rachel. The
story of the proposal was unique to them. At the Ryder depot, where they had stopped to get gas, Rachel said, “I guess this is as good a time as any,” and proceeded to pop the question. She had perfectly positioned it so they were in front of the Ryder sight that says “Together we are going places.”
During lunch, we chatted about where we would live (Rachel from Alaska, Kyle from Scotland) and how many children we’d have. I think we decided on living at Mirembe, in the second house. Between the children I already have and the ones we will have, it won’t take long for us to have our own choir- the Frican Children’s Choir. Rachel and I were pretty stoked about letting Kyle pick up our checks from here on out.
Lunch was amazing. I think between the 6 of us, we ate a whole cow. The mashed potatoes were phenomenal, and the ribs… oh my! The meat covered the entire plate! Rosco Wilson would have been in heaven for about 20 minutes (that shows you just how big the bones were!) had I been able to give them to him. Afterwards, we split
some cheesecake and pecan pie. Yum. Today was also my first time eating buffalo wings. Truly a day of firsts.
Shortly after, Sarah came out and sat across from Kyle. She had a speech prepared, a poem really. Kyle’s face turned red instantly as he responded with “Oh no.” We were all too stuffed to really laugh, but did our best. Sarah’s proposal was beautiful. Complete with a ring and a gift.
We checked into the hotel (which started as a place for game hunters to stop, to there’s trophies all over), and the truck hadn’t arrived yet. We, as usual checked in Kyle, and Anne took a key to his room. When he arrived and went into his room, Anne was waiting, on one knee, to propose. Number 4.
Once we got settled, we started a game of poker (my first time, again) on the veranda near the pool. An hour or so into it, Kyle got a call from Jessica in NY. She also called to ask him for his hand. Five.
As of right now, only 5 have proposed. Could be as many as 3 more tonight. Beth and Sharye probably will, but
Prossy is probably in bed. That’s a lot of rings!
So, a list of proposals.
Jami- I made him nervous and sounded really serious. I was the first.
Rachel- At the Ryder depot. Together we are going places.
Sarah- A sweet poem at the BBQ joint.
Anne- In Kyle’s room, on one knee, when he arrived at the hotel.
Jessica- Phone call from New York.
We’ve been getting updates from our old choir kids in Kenya and are very happy with the progress being made after the elections. ACC is a fun thing to be a part of, for that reason. It’s a big family of people from all over the world, all connected for the same cause. Please keep Kenya in your prayers; our kids are there making a difference! Our school got ransacked and robbed, but the teachers refused to abandon their posts. Many people fled from their home but are going back as they can, determined to see their country change.
