Myrtle Beach Travel Park
I have to start off today’s blog with the events of last night.
I made a very conscious decision to leave my camping down comforter home for this trip. Instead, I had my HUGE king sized and heavy cotton quilt, and a small red fake-down throw (Kristine, if your reading, you will remember this one) – plenty to keep me warm until I get to FL where it WILL be warm and I won’t need the HUGE queen size very fluffy very comfy down comforter. Why did I decide to leave it home? Just because it is sooooo fluffy and takes up a full cabinet by itself. I can fit the rest of my bedding in one cabinet, but that blasted thing takes up one all by itself. I thought the space would be better served by leaving it home.
I never really warmed up yesterday. It rained and drizzled all day, and I was cold to the bone. Even though I had my heater on, I was still cold. For the hour before I went to bed, I had my sweat suit pajamas on, cotton hat, hoodie with
hood up, and wool shawl wrapped around me. I finally had to go to bed to warm up. NOT. Cotton quilt doubled, fake-down throw over that, wool shawl at feet, cotton hat on head. I fell asleep watching the later play of the latest Dance Moms. I woke up at 3 am absolutely frozen and had to go to the bathroom. As I dragged myself out of bed, I lost one of my socks in the bedding, and as I flipped the blankets back the tv remote flew down between the bed and the wall, I heard it thump. Frak.
Bio break first, then turned on lights and found and replaced the sock. Located the flashlight and pointed it down the abyss of that space you never want to look at between the bed and wall. I saw the seatbelts that I didn’t know were there and a lot of dust and finally located the remote. This is a tiny crack, and I had to compress my arm to fit down the abyss. Remote in hand, sock on, I organized the blankets again and tried to fall back to sleep. I eventually turned the TV on and even though
Mermaids' Toenail
I have never seen one with the bottom shell attached, and found 2 today! I have 50 channels, I had the choice of the same infomercial on 3 channels, numerous home shopping networks, some Shirley Temple movie, and some kind of Egyptian thing on History channel that I opted for. Winston now thought it was time to get up and go out. Yell, yell, yell, kick off my bed, yell some more, finally settle down and fell back to sleep until 7:30 and bright sunshine.
Now, you might ask, where was my heat in all this? I had my space heater on, set to 70 degrees, but when it’s 35 degrees out it really is ineffective. I have a built in propane heater, but the mechanical and fan parts are underneath the bed, so I don’t use it while sleeping.
The fact that the sun was out immediately cheered me up. I opened the room darkening shades, and the windows were WET with condensation. Took Winston for a walk on the beach and got an amazing 30 minutes after sunrise photo, (PICTURE) and did some shell picking. (PICTURE)
With the sun out and shining on the east side of the RV, it warmed up nicely!!! I didn’t need any type of
heat until 5:00 pm.
With breakfast I read the latest Camping World brochure I received in the mail the last day I was home. It seems that when you buy any 9x12 mat, you also receive a FREE mat carrying case, $15 value. I did not receive that. I hunted down my receipt, put it in the brochure, and, since I have to pass Camping World on my way out of town, I will go ask for it.
I installed the chair rack on the ladder and hung the chairs off it. Cool. I cleaned out the box on the back platform, and I put the bike bag on the left side of this platform, under the chairs. (PICTURE) I sent this picture to son Tim, and he called me a Benny (inside joke to my NJ peeps) and I said I prefer the term gypsy. I don’t think it will be safe there just with bungie cords holding it down, so first stop once back on the road is Home Depot or Lowes for new straps, then Camping World.
Another long walk with Winston and more shell picking at noontime. This is something I do every
time I go to the beach in Wilmington. I collect different types for different projects. Large ones go under the downspouts at my house so that the large holes developing there from the intense rains do not wash out any more. Small shells get separated into vases, dishes, and jars depending on type and sometimes size, and get used for my various craft projects (lampshades, picture frames, and Christmas trees (a new project for 2013)). Here in Myrtle Beach, as most places , different types of shells drop out of the tide at different areas depending on weight. My outbound walk is at water’s edge; my inbound walk is at the high tide mark. The early morning walk had me spying everywhere for that very elusive unbroken sand dollar or large whelk, or even a shark’s tooth. Shark’s teeth are the hardest for me to look for. My eyes are not naturally drawn to anything black, so I really have to concentrate on looking only for them. To date, in all my years, I have found only 2. The noontime walk is a horse of a different color. The sun being higher in the sky hits the mermaids’ toenails and makes them shine, so that’s what I look for when the sun is high in the sky. I did manage to get some good ones today, and felt satisfied. Nanny D, there are absolutely NO scallop shells of any size or shape here. The best part? My new shell picker gift that the Wilmington Scoutelas gang gave me for my last birthday is awesome. I don’t bend over to pick anything up now. Thanks all, great gift!!!
Winston needs some reinforcement of his camping behavior, which he seems to have lost in the year since we have been out. He needs constant reminder to heel, not pull the leash, not bark at other dogs, not jump on those trying to say hello. He has been challenging lately. I feel like I am training a brand new dog all over again, and he needs to re-learn that I am alpha dog, not him.
Dinner: carrots, tomatoes, croutons, ranch dressing (no lettuce in the fridge), Unknown brand herb garlic crumb coated haddock fillet, and a LoCarb ice cream bar. Satisfying.
I meet up with Ginnie tomorrow in southern SC. Yes, I know, I owe my readers a whole blog about Ginnie, and it will be coming soon, I promise.
I heard from Judy B, a NJ camping friend, and she is headed north in her RV returning from a conference in Orlando, and we might try to meet up in northern FL for a day or 2.
I am content.
