Huntington Beach SC SP to Myrtle Beach Travel Park, SC
Windy Windy Windy!!! OMG was it Windy. Did I say it was Windy? My rig was rocking and rolling and I wasn’t even moving!!!! Up reasonably early, and couldn’t even walk on the beach. The sand was blowing like drifting snow. Took a shower in the bathhouse and packed up awaiting the 11:00 departure to view Nancy’s bicycles. She wasn’t ready until 11:30, and that was making me annoyed, as I wanted to be on the road. I didn’t ask some pertinent questions which would have saved me the aggravation, but both bicycles were men’s, and I can’t get my leg over a man’s bike, so I reneged on both. She was very disappointed, as she really wanted my TV. She was having a heated discussion with her new tenants, and I was uncomfortable, so I put my rig in D and sped away honking my horn as I left.
I headed South 5 miles to The Fresh Market and got some goodies to eat for the next few days. Then I turned North on my old friend US 17 to drive the 25
miles to MBTP. That ride took me almost 1.5 hours. They are widening 17 at the major intersections, and traffic was stopped at all the traffic lights to let heavy equipment cross. Annoying. But, turning lemons into lemonade….I had checked to see what the average price of gas was, $3.519 seemed the average. When I saw a sign for $3.499 I pulled into Murphy and filled up to the max $75 they allowed (GROWL!) figuring by summer the price would even be more, so get as much as I can of this ‘cheap’ gas.
When I got to MBTP I asked if I could drive around to pick out my site, and the clerk said ‘sure.’ There are many more RVers here than I have seen in the past, lots of big rigs that are here for the season. My previous readers will remember that this is the place that has the association with Tippie Toe Repo that rents and places large 5
th wheels on sites for months at a time, and that sure is what’s here. It must be very financially attractive! I selected site 99 that had an empty site on my door side – good for
Winston to have some space. These sites are very narrow – if I were to put out my awning it would reach the ‘property’ line. But, they are very level and all have a picnic table covered by a roof. Many of the long term people have enclosed these huts with plastic and added doors and windows and heaters to give them more living space. I was very excited with my site because I could sit at my dinette and look out the window and see the ocean. A great way to end my trip. I hurriedly plugged in and went for a walk, and, while the wind had calmed down some, it was still raging. Winston hated it, he just wanted to leave. I met my neighbors, nice folks from Toms River, NJ, and I know I have met them before. Their dog, Jessie, is a non barky Schnauzer who loves Winston and he loves her. I think it is something about the size of dogs that Winston takes to, Jessie is just a little shorter than him, and they actually play together. Cool.
I was sitting at my dinette, watching the ocean, when one of those loud
diesel pickup trucks hauling an older trailer pull in and block my view. And, as it turns out, they chose that site because it was near their friends. If I had only known I would have traded sites with them, or chosen another one. As it is, they all now walk all over the place to visit, all day long; of course Winston barks anytime someone comes close to the rig. GROWL. I am trying hard not to be crabby about this, but I had such a nice view.
Shell collecting here is better than further south. I have made a good start for my collection for my sun room. The ocean goes out pretty far, and there are good pickings at the high tide mark as well as at water’s edge. There are tidal pools that are shell collectors; I don’t have to walk too far to be productive.
The wind died down a little bit during the evening, but the temperature dropped, and it was 40 when I went to bed wrapped in my blanket, heat on, hat on, socks on. Winston slept on my bed even, he was cold too.

March 6, 2012 MBTP
I wanted to see the sunrise; I set the alarm for 6:10 and got some great pictures at 6:38. Temperature outside 38, Temperature inside 55. Windy, but not as bad as yesterday.
Early morning is the best time for shell collecting, and I did find sea anemones which are beautiful when all cleaned up of their spines. Shark’s teeth are hard to find as there are so many curvy black oyster shell parts making them difficult to spot. I walked until I was frozen and Winston was balking, but there were a lot of people with dogs out checking out the gorgeous sunrise.
I met Dori. A single camper from WI here for a month walking her ??Black Retriever??? Looking dog and an 18 year old gray spotted hairy lovely mutt. She is new to full timing and will be doing it for at least 3 years while she travels the country leading up her “We The People” campaign which will end in creating a monument in Washington. Interesting lady and I hope I see her again tomorrow morning to learn more about what she does.
When the sun comes up here
it shines brightly on the RV making it nice and warm and toasty and I love it. I spent some time cleaning up, getting ready to end my trip, and trying to find reasonably priced airfare so I can visit Kristine, Lou, and Maggie in Salt Lake City after they move.
The afternoon was pretty lazy, a little cleaning, a little shelling (Sea Anemones, a nice find; first you have to let them dry out, then peel the spines off, then scoop out the dead creature, then bleach them, but they are beautiful – I now have 3), a little reading, a little Farmville. My walks took me around the campground and there are a lot of rigs here….this is a busy place for such a cool climate. They are building a new façade on their store and laundry area. The laundry has the same old machines, but beautiful new doors, roof and siding.
Wifi here is free and very good. I watched hulu TV this afternoon
My dinner was Fresh Market coconut shrimp, and I didn’t like the coconut breading – it was too thick and destroyed the taste of the shrimp. Very disappointing as I
was really looking forward to it. When I turned on the oven, something that must have dropped off the pizza I cooked the other day started to burn. My smoke detector went off. I had to turn the large fan on, open all the windows and wait for the smoke to clear. It was cold. The wind picked up as the afternoon progressed and continues to rock the rig, Winston gets freaky when it’s bad, but tomorrow promises to be a beautiful day, high near 70 and I am going to enjoy my last Snowbird day outside as much as I can. I’m gonna run my numbers and share them with you tomorrow. I am beginning to be psyched about being home. I think the cool weather has had something to do with making me more ready to go home. I am excited to start to work in my garden and spend quality time with my peeps.
