Hablamos pronto…
You normally don’t start with the end, but in this case it is. August 9th ended our Boone, NC adventure, adventure that started on August 4th of 2004 for me and 10 years ago for Fern. Boone
has taken a big chunk of my life and a huge part of my heart. I got my MS in Biology at Appalachian State university, but more than that it was the start of the rebirth of my person. In Boone I got married to my love Fern, but also I grew as a person, grew my first garden, played the best soccer, made excellent friends, saw my first snow, had my first car, my first apartment and learned to live life anxiously. I saw incredible sunrises and sunsets at the Blue Ridge Mountains, saw weird animals unseen by my eyes before, saw my first salamander, listen to Bluegrass for the first time, camped out in the fall (my favorite time to camp out) and I became a fan of souther rock and roll with Alman Brothers and Widespread Panic (saw both in concert and the latter many times), anyways, it was the end of a beautiful adventure that I will never forget. I hope to come back to Boone many times, because that beautiful piece of Earth stole a huge chunk of my heart. This past Friday saw the sunrise at bald Rock, Brevard, NC, USA on this huge
rock formation, characteristic of the Appalachia. It went down the hill like dried lava getting lost in the woods at the bottom. The always present white fog was all over the valley in my view, with only the blue peaks of the mountains showing through the fog like a dragon’s back in a lake, the sun light came out slowly making the sky pink and orange, while we were looking at the star shower, with this perfect, continuous, cool and calm breeze of early morning that became a sign for me of a perfect ending of our adventure in the Appalachian mountains and the beginning of our tropical adventure. Thanks Wendy for taking us to such an awesome spot to see the start showers.
The beginning is obvious; we’ll start an adventure that will be one of the most incredible experiences of our lives. An adventure that will find us at the end in Costa Rica, but jobless, without a house and probably broke, hehe. Even though we are not stressed about it personally the challenge excites me. It will be a another adventure, start a sustainable farm from scratch, educate people in environmental, scientific and other subjects using sustainable
agriculture as a tool and classroom, and also grow our own food and sell some. I haven’t found anything more gratifying than eat something I grew, it is not easy, it is hard work, it requires knowledge that most farmers have already in Costa Rica and that we want to mix with our knowledge, we are novices in farming in the tropics. The experience we have gathered is from the temperate areas, with 4 seasons. This trip is also an investment to our knowledge, and experience, so that we can gather techniques and knowledge to develop our ideas in our land, and why not have an adventure of a life time in the process, life is short we have to live it to the max. From here we’ll head to Iva, SC where CAP (Fern’s dad) and Theresa (Fern’s stepmom), a stop I always enjoy. Talk to ya’ll soon…
