Nine hours after leaving Minneapolis, we drove underneath the inspiring Great Platte River Archway Monument at Kearney, Nebraska, where we stayed our first night. A few years ago we stayed in Kearney to watch the Sandhill crane migration during March. An amazing experience.

We thundered across the prairie, listening to a library MP3 download of the tragic narrative of the rise and fall of the Comanches---from pre-Spanish encroachment to the final denouement with settlers in the Texas Territory: Empire of the Summer Moon by S. C. Gwynne.

Lunch at an Iowa reststop was a cold Italian frittata in a whole wheat wrap with lettuce and avocados. The frittata gently cooked while we ate breakfast before our trip began this morning.
