me and Nebraska
Me and Nebraska at a bar in Kansas City Just a few more long drives and I would be home and I can consider this trip a success. Left my final hostel of the trip, Hostel 66 at 7:30AM and mentally prepped myself for a 12 - 13 hour drive to Kansas City Missouri. I must admit I was already exhausted before starting just thinking about it. 2 hours in I made my first stop at Denny's. As far as I can tell I have been to a Denny's in basically every state on this trip. Standard breakfast with juice and it was tasty but I will say the waitress I had was quite rude to all her customers. She kept trying to hurry everyone along by coming back every 30 seconds and asked if "You ready yet". I didn't mind too much but other people in the restaurant looked peeved after they said for the 3rd time I just need a few minutes.
After this I settled into a groove and I did confirm one thing about Google Maps. Once you go off route and it does not have internet access it will reroute you onto local roads because that is the next route it has. This unfortunately slows you down considerably because the interstate is always going to be faster. I switched over to my backup GPS and that got me back on the interstate.
I passed through New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. I found myself in a strange zone as my exhausted state weighed down on me. The caffeine pills kept me awake but put me in that strange zone. I drove through the darkness towards Kansas City and pulled up to Kelsey's apartment and gave her a ring as I had no idea where to park. Being the great lady she is she came outside and directed me to the parking garage. After that we went up to her well appointed apartment. it is not particular big but it is large enough for one person with the occasional guests. She has also decorated and furnished it well. Especially when compared to my apartment back home in Canada.
Some background on Kelsey. We met on the Topdeck Tour in 2013. She was one of 3 Americans on that tour and I met her in Paris. She is friendly lady and looked younger than her 23 years would suggest. Everyone would call her Nebraska on the tour because that is where she is from. She moved to Kansas City after the tour so I renamed her Kansas. She is one of the nicest ladies on the tour and I remember everyone on the bus liked her. So when I planned my cross country tour I absolutely had to see her. She was also nice enough to put me up for 2 days as well. In gratitude I brought her some maple syrup from Canada and a small bottle of tequila from Mexico.
Tonight I would sleep on an actual bed. In this case a fold out couch which was considerably more comfortable than some of the hostel beds I have been sleeping in recently. Kelsey was also good enough to make me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich which I had not eaten in a number of years. It was nice to talk Kelsey again and even thought I was still exhausted I stayed up a bit longer to chat with her. Finally it was time to sleep and I was out like a light. Tomorrow would be my only down day of the trip. I had no tourists things planned so I wondered what I would do.
