June 10 Hemlocks Lean-to, MA to Tom Lenard Lean-to, MA 14.3 Miles

Ear plugs are a wonderful invention. D snores some, CC and I both ended up wearing ear plugs but got a blissful night’s sleep. The mist hung in all night with everything slightly amp in the morning. I did see the sun for a brief moment at sunrise. Oatmeal for breakfast with coffee. We were packed up and on the trail by 7:30. One of the joys of walking the AT when it rains is putting on cold, clammy wet cloths in the morning.

The trail started off fairly flat then we dropped off "Jug End" a near 1,000' shear drop. The footing was tricky. I took a small fall on the way down. The next seven miles were across a valley where we got attacked by thousands of mosquitoes. They were on us like sharks after a bleeding tuna. While walking across the valley there were many boardwalks. I took a couple of more spills there.

We stopped in a farmer’s field around noon for chow and to dry out our tent stuff. We looked like gypsies, but things got dry. After lunch we started up East Mountain. Three miles of walking with nearly 1,500' vertical gain. More wet rocks and a couple more spills for me. CC was worried about me, however I'm OK. I got a few scrapes and scratches, my lower back is a bit sore but I did walk 14.3 miles.

We made the shelter by 3:45, Unplugged had stopped in for a break then kept on. We were beat so this is it for us. Tomorrow we will try to make 21.5 miles then the next day will be 17.6 miles. We have to do this so we can make Dalton, MA before noon on Saturday. We have to pick up a resupply box there. There is nowhere in town we can afford to stay the weekend. We need to get there and keep moving.
