Our second day here at Cranwell was much quieter, but just as relaxing, as our first day. We were up again by eight thirty and this time, had breakfast delivered to our room, which was done so with a flourish. The continental breakfast wasn't overly exciting, but it hit the spot, and we were ready for our morning yoga class. I've found that each yoga class I've taken has been different, depending on who the instructor is, and this was no exception. Luckily, since I've been away from yoga for a while, the class was very slow and the instructor very forgiving about doing postures correctly. So it was quite enjoyable.
After the class was over, it was off to the pool for a quick swim before lunch. It was hard to motivate myself to jump into the cool water, especially with the backdrop of wall to wall windows showcasing the surrounding snow. But I was glad to get the chance to loosen my muscles, which were sore from the previous day's aqua mix. We lazily swam a few laps of the pool and then decided to get our second day's spa lunch - unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment
over the previous day's meal. My salad would have been good had the dressing not had a hint of hand soap in it. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was eating soap, so I eventually gave up on the salad. And the turkey wrap was depressingly bland, with a laughable hint of mayonnaise in place only to give the turkey moisture and certainly not for flavor. And the meal was seriously missing a side of french fries. But we finished it anyway, and I added a pear so that I could at least enjoy something I was putting in my mouth!
Following lunch, we decided to sit in the hot tub for a little while. I aligned my tired back and shoulders with a jet, and let the water massage out the kinks while I enjoyed a women's travel book I'm reading, including a laugh-out-loud account of Ellen DeGeneres flying on a plane. After a little while, we ventured into the steam room. I've never been in a steam room before, and have only seen them on tv, but I quite liked it. It had a distinctly wooden smell, thanks to the walls and benches, and the coals
in the corner lent it a warm, but dry heat. It was impossible to figure out how hot it was in there, with the broken thermometer telling us that we were enjoying a comfortable 165 degrees fahrenheit...right. That was enough heat for one afternoon, so it was time to shower and get ready for our three o'clock massages.
My massage therapist was a man named Jerry, who was pleased that I have such a strong handshake (can't work with lawyers without one, they'll eat you alive). I have never had a male masseuse before, so it was a new experience, and turned out to be a great one. Jess and I had been musing earlier on the differences between male and female masseuses, and I think the major differences are that men have bigger hands and more upper body strength, which are two assets when giving a massage. It also turned out that Jerry is related to someone on my beloved
Devils team -
Zach Parise - by marriage. So that was a pretty cool discovery (my tattoo tipped him off that I'm a fan - nothing like wearing your team spirit right on your body!). The massage was wonderfully
relaxing, and when he got to my feet, I thought that if I could get just my feet massaged every day for the rest of my life, I would be incredibly relaxed. It was a delicious way to spend the afternoon. Jess was similarly pleased with her massage, so much so that she was definitely ready for a nap once it was over. We decided to skip that evening's Barefoot Boogie class in favor of hanging out back at the room.
As we left the spa, we realized that the forecasted snow had arrived! It was like a little wonderland with the snow softly falling on the cozy buildings and out on the golf course. It reminded me of how much I miss
Hamilton, and the small town feel and even the snow! We weren't quite tucked in for the night though, because we were ordering take out from Sloane's Tavern, which, while only a short distance, is long enough when it's snowing and you haven't thought to bring snow boots. We were starving, which is a bad way to order dinner, and I was excited to find out that they would make the chicken caesar wrap for me,
with fries - delicious. The fries made our terrible lunch seem that much further away. It was good to relax after dinner and enjoy
Grey's Anatomy. Today, we'll debate going to the aqua mix class at ten before heading home - the muscles in my back are complaining already, so we'll have to see how that goes. Maybe digging out my car from the few inches of snow that we got will be enough of a workout for me! I'll be sad to leave this place, where I think seriously about different ways to enjoy a workout and the ways my body works, as well as find constant pampering, but it's definitely been an enjoyable break!
