A new girl in our room from Vancouver decided to come with me to the Polynesian Culture Center today. Our bus came and picked us up at 10:30 am. We had the weirdest driver ever. She told us her whole life story and didnt stop talking the entire way up to the center (about an hour and a half). As soon as you walk into the centre they put a lei on you and then you get your picture taken with 2 polynesians. Of course getting the picture costs about $18!!! It was super hot out by the time we got there.
Our first stop was to take a canoe trip to the other end of the park. We had a Fijian driver and he was really funny. Lots of cool things to see from the canoe. Once off the canoe we stopped in at the Hawaiian village and tried some poi (taro root made into a paste...was ok but not really haha). We played a couple of traditional games, one with spinning tops, a bowling alley kind of game, something like chinese checkers and another one that I was terrible at. Then we got to learn how to hula.
It was lots of fun!!!
Stopped into the Fiji village next. We got to play some bamboo drums and then got to watch some traditional dancing which was really neat. Fiji guys are kinda cute!
Next up was New Zealand (Aoteorea) where we played a couple of games. One was a stick game which is good for hand eye coordination. Lots of fun and kinda hard.
Then there was a canoe pageant where all the countries had their own canoes and did some traditional dancing. It was neat to see. NZ was really cool.
Walked through Tonga’s village next and then went to Tahiti’s village. We got to go fishing using the traditional method. We stuck little balls of dough onto our hooks and then dropped the hooks far down into the water and when you feel a tug you pull up. Well, I caught a fish on my first try haha but that was all I caught. I’m sure you loved reading this dad!!!
We then watched an imax movie about reefs in the pacific. Then it was time for our Luau. We get a fresh flower lei greeting and then we get seated
at big tables. Met some cool people at our table. Throughout the luau a host lady is talking and singing and bringing up dancers to dance. We watched them pull the pig from the underground oven (Imu). The buffet dinner was really good, purple sweet potatoe, rice, chicken the kualua pork (pig), salad and buns and seafood which I didnt eat haha.
I had some yummy yummy coconut cake for dessert and coconut pudding. Mmmm. After dinner we went to the show put on by the center. We had awesome seats and the show was amazing!! It had a bit of a story line to it and had dances form all the countries. The fire dancers were my favorite. It was really cool.
We got back to the hostel around 11pm. I headed to bed soon after. BUT....I was woken up in the middle of the night to the sounds of a guy in our room with one of the girls ummm....doing stuff in bed hahaha. Yikes. It was a crazy night, the hostel reception guy came up and ended up kicking the guy out and it was a drunken chaotic mess with the one girl. She didnt
want the guy to leave. Anyways after all of that you’d think it would be quiet to go back to sleep but noooooo drunk girl decides to get on her phone and talk really loudly in some other language for like an hour. I think I fell back asleep at like 4:30 am maybe. The life of a hosteler haha.

Great to hear and see how much fun you had here. We will have to go to Hawaii again and take this in.
