It's fair to say that I've seen my fair share of cold weather this winter. Working for Westjet means that I get to visit many Canadian cities and in winter - they're cold. In Calgary a few weeks ago it was minus 52 with the wind chill and the poor baggage handlers were feeling the effects of frostbite, bbrrrrrrr. However, it also means that I get to use passes to go to nice warm places - like Hawaii. Mike and I decided that we'd go away for my Birthday weekend. It's the best way to give presents to one another (since his a few weeks before mine). We were thinking of going somewhere like Palm Springs as it's only a two and a half hour flight from Vancouver. The flights were all busy coming back into Vancouver on the Sunday though. It was a holiday for schools, so most of the flights we were looking at no seats left. The only flight that we had a hope of getting on was Honolulu. Not that I was complaining!!!! I always love going and Mike has never been. So it was decided.
We left on the Thursday morning flight to Maui and
then jumped on a Go flight over to Honolulu. The Go plane was quite small and the flight attendant was wearing a pair of tiny shorts - the whole experience was quite comedic. That was until Mike heard from another passenger that they heard of a plane that nearly crashed as one of the pilot's fell asleep. EEEeeekkkk!!!! Thankfully we landed safe and sound and were soon on a bus into Waikiki. We stayed one night in a rather strange building that was a mix of hotel rooms and normal residence rooms. Weird. After Mike had a jog along the Ala Wai Canal and I'd bought beer and Maui chips for a refreshment, we headed out for dinner. I chose and we went to California Pizza Kitchen and shared pizzas. We had my favourite - Thai Chicken and I thought of Sheri and Vegas as I ate 😊 We then made it back to our room for a good night's sleep.
The next morning we were up bright and early. We packed and checked out of our room. We dropped of our bags of at our new hotel, the Sheraton. Then it was off on the climb to get
to Diamond Head, which is a crater at the edge of Waikiki. We strolled along by the beach first of all, stopping at Starbucks to get our morning caffine fix and then continued up to Diamond Head. On the way we bumped into Renee and Pete, who are a husband and wife team who also work at Westjet and who both happened to be working on the same flight. We chatted with them for a little while and then kept going. We got to the crater and it was hot and busy. It's a great climb though and we enjoyed the view at the top before heading back down. We went back to Waikiki around the other side of the crater which follows the coastline into Waikiki. Unfortunately my hot feet were getting rubbed to death inside my shoes and I had big blisters forming. When we were close to the beach walk into town my shoes came off which was complete bliss. We made our way to the Sheraton and checked into our room. Changed into our beach gear and were off again. First stop was International Market which has a food court. Here we enjoyed my favourite Vietnamese
for lunch. We then headed to the beach. We walked away from the busy and went to the quieter area at the edge, close to Diamond Head. We found a wee spot and thoroughly enjoyed languishing in the warm, sunny weather. Cocktail hour soon hit and Mike went off to ABC and came back with a coolbag with some beers and we smuggled them into beer coolers and enjoyed a wee drink as the sun went down. Eventually we strolled back to the hotel and took some time to chill out on our nice lanai which overlooked the main street and International Market. It was so nice to be lazy and we soon realised that it was getting late and that we needed to find somewhere for dinner. Where we wanted to go was busy and didn't have tables so we went to another restaurant which wasn't too bad - nice lobster spring rolls.
The next day we walked out to the Ala Moana Mall. They had one of their morning special sales on and we both found a few bargains. By this point I realised that Mike needed some lunch as he was getting a little cranky😊 So
we went to the food court in Shirokiya which is a Japanese department store. We got a variety of different things which filled us up quite nicely. Then we jumped on a bus back into Waikiki and hit the beach again for the afternoon. The sunset on both days wasn't as good as I remember for Hawaii and we realised that it was probably due to the eclipse that occured a few nights before. It was still affecting the light. It didn't affect the beer though! They still went down a treat.
That evening I had already decided that I wanted to go to Dee Thai, which is a great Thai restaurant that I always loved to go to with my Harmony friends. Since we were at the right end of the Waikiki, we just headed up from the beach. We stopped on the way to stock up the beer in our cool bag as the restaurant has a bring your own policy - perfect. We enjoyed a very yummy dinner before making our way back into town.
We were leaving the next morning. I got up early to have a last walk around, stocking up on a
few more essential items. Then we jumped on the bus for the airport. It's sad to leave, however, the weather made us feel better this time. As the bus was leaving Waikiki, the clouds rolled in and it started to rain. It just poured. We had a perfect two days of sun though and I really have to say, a wee trip away with my man is the best present that a girl can get!!!
Bye for now everyone,
Lots of love.
