Waikiki Sunset
Amazing...and what I love the most is how it just gets better and better each minute July 4-5 *2 pages of pictures again*there are some really pretty ones...don't forget to click 'next'
Ah…7:45am, a little groggy, but water and two Excedrin (my best drinking buddy) have made it easy to stand up. It wasn’t the best night’s sleep for sure, but my Saturday morning run awaits me.
Memories of the previous night quickly surface as I reach into my purse and pull out a giant handful of stuff I don’t remember ever putting in there: two crown royal pouches, two small American flags, and a necklace of some sort…ah…Chip. I love funny people! He must’ve pulled it off the ceiling and walls at the Nashville Bar. Very humorous.
I tried catching a bus to get to Niketown by 9am, but I failed to check the holiday schedule and the bus wasn’t anywhere in sight, so I ran there instead. I ran the 4.5 mile course with Niketown, had my little sampler breakfast, then made my way back to the Honolua Surf store to shop the big sale. Two hours later I left with some new cute beach clothes and walked back downtown to check out the sights that I didn’t see on my previous excursion.
Not much to do other than take pictures of the Iolani Palace that was closed for the holiday and the big King Kamehameha Statue and by noon I was hungry and ready to return home.
I spent a few hours lying on the beach waiting for something fun to come my way on this 4th of July. I met up with Bill and a few of his friends barbequing on the beach and we ended up finding a place on the boardwalk to sit and watch the sunset and fireworks. Too bad it was so far away from Ala Moana where they were lighting them off. I wish we had left the bbq and walked down closer, but oh well….there’s always next year.
Sunday morning we woke early and excited to join a 12 mile hike to the summit of the Ko’olau’s (the big mountain range). We had found it in the paper and had invited Bill’s Frisbee friend Kira to come along. Unfortunately, we quickly found out that the paper had misprinted the meeting time and we were 30 minutes late; too late to catch up and join along.
We decided to improvise and find
Me & Bill watching the sunset
our spot for the 4th of July fireworks our own hike. We bought a hiking book at Borders and set off to the north shore to find the trail. It was closed. Lucky for me, Kira was up for the adventure and the long drive so we set out on a scenic drive along the north shore. I was thrilled to finally see all the places my friends have been telling me about. We stopped at Turtle Beach where the turtles were easy to spot and watch swimming in the shallow water, sharks cove, then Ted’s where we tasted their famous chocolate huapia pie, by sunset beach, Chinaman’s Hat in Kaneohe, and eventually up to the Pali overlook where we parked and set off on what would be a 6 hour hike to nowhere.
The plan was to hike a trail called Likeke, but we needed better directions (oops, left the hiking book in the car), so we turned around in search of the Maunawili Falls trail that we had passed earlier. This trail ran along the most incredible ridge of the Ko’olau’s for nine miles towards a town named Waimanalo. We must’ve gotten pretty close to this town before realizing that we weren’t on the path
to the falls. So we doubled back, by this point we had been hiking for at least 4 hours. We tried another trail that branched off, but as it got late and we grew tired, we decided that the falls were not to be...so headed back to the car. By the time we reached the car at the top of the overlook it was already 6pm and we were exhausted!
Dinner, a beer, and a movie - Into the Wild, then off to bed. No falls, but a good day for sure!
