Tears... - From: Last Hash, Last Days in Paradise
I am shedding tears for you, too, as I know it is hard to leave some place so..perfect. But, you will be back. I really think that for some, Hawaii gets in your soul and becomes part of you. I think there is a yogurt place like that at the Biltmore - I think. Glad you have had such an amazing summer! Are you doing this again next summer? Can't wait for your last posts.. I am waiting for the one you told me about! Can't wait to see you! Enjoy you last few hours!

Enjoy your blogs - From: The Final Countdown
I recently discovered your blogs and I just wanted to let you know how much I've enjoyed them. My husband and I are coming out to Oahu in a few weeks for a visit and I've gotten a lot of great info from you! I've been taking notes of the restaurants, bars, hikes, beaches, etc. that you recommend and can't wait to check them out! Too bad you're leaving soon so we can't meet up for a drink when I get there =0) Anyway, just wanted to thank you for all the great tips! Aloha!

Fruit on the ground - From: Climbing Koko Head
Do you actually pick up this fruit on the ground and eat it? Hmm. How do you wash it off? Hawaii really does seem to be like Gilligan's Island - or Lost. Those stairs LOOK daunting. I would have been thinking that from the start. Good for you for finishing! I completely understand about dinner. Or anything such related. And I have read much about that Rainbow Drive-In. I am sure Jay would love it. I would probably love it too, but be obsessing about teh macaroni salad. Damn that sounds good. The best I had was at Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina. I love that place. I think we ate there three times when we were in Maui - and it is totally cheap which I love even more. I love all food, but bargain food that is good is my fav. I haven't ever been to a farmer's market. I need to go. Tomorrow there is one at the Citadel (59th Ave & 101) and soon Vincent's should have their s again. I need to get to one. I am sure I would love it.

She picked Ed... - From: The Final Countdown
the guy who picked my least favorite ring. I do't care how huge it was, I just didn't like it. I liked the little hottie Kiptyn from San Diego who just seemed like an all around sweetheart. She kept mentioning that, but picked the other guy. I didn't watch this season, except for the last epsiode. I really like Jillian on The Bachelor. She can always politely tell Ed that the ring isn't quite what she was hoping for. I am proud of you for beign T.V. free. I have gone without TV for many years, until meeting Jay. I am going to need to eliminate it because I am paying for yoga and need to be there rather than having my ass planted on the couch - except to spend Wednesdays when Lost returns. It helps when you cancel cable and only have channels through 22. They have the religious station which I am clearly not watching. Now onto Aric. I think that is hilarious that you had to tie him up!! I wasn't expecting that story, but it is funny. And even funnier I think it is a riot that they are so inappropriate next to a school. I tend to be very uptight myself, but this is probably funny to watch, though I would not participate in the singing. NO Mexican or margaritas tonight. Going to pour myself a glass of Chardonnay and make some healthy pizzas since I had a treat from AJ's. Okay, my wine is a treat too, but I don't count liquids. Enoy your last few days. One of your blog posts is probably more eventful than some people's summers. I am so glad you have gotten to have this great experience! Call me when you get home and let's make plans to drink and talk in person. I should be good for Sunday! Or Friday night happy hour....one Friday night we need to go for Sangria at Lola's on Camelback & 8th...whatever..we need to celebrate your successful voyage!

Turtles & Tanlines - From: I Love Turtles
Whoa, you are putting my tan to shame! Which I happen to be very proud of by the way-probably the least white I have ever been, which I guess really isn't saying that much. I am way into those turtles!! Coming up on the beach like that- how cool!!!! I told Courtney about them and she is veeerrry jealous that you have gotten to swim with turtles, I guess they don't come over here to SD. I have a theory that maybe I am having such a hard time snorkeling because the water isn't clear here, so hard to stick your head under not knowing what the heck is next to you/under you at that very moment! Theory or not- I'm bummed that I don't have the balls to just go out snorkeling on a whim. On that note, I'm off to the beach, gotta try and catch my tan up to yours for my last week of beach time- and the water hasn't been too cold the passed few days, maybe it's a boogie board kind of day. LOVE YOU!!

Congrats... - From: The Top of Mt. Olympus & Surfing
on finishing the hike! It really does look incredible. So what are you going ot do back here for excitement? You have done the coolest hings in HI. I want to know because I need to do mre exciting things here. I am glad Terry got to take the bus. I think the bus system on Ohau is great - though a little time conusming and occasionally having to sit next to people who are in need of a hygiene class. Think of all the driving you have not done and how you have lessened your impact on the environment - that is really cool in itself. I tried reading Harry Potter to a fourth grade class I had one year; they jsut weren't getting the humor so I stopped. No more work talk - I am back Monday for a short day - at my boss's house, an informal gathering which might not be so bad. Think of me as you snorkel, surf, or hike!

- From: I Love Turtles
Hi Jen! I didn't want to leave the blog without commenting this time since it's been a few days since I left my last message. For some reason, I feel tired and boring. Yep, boring. A good night's sleep is in order. As I looked through your pictures I thought to myself, "I wonder how many pictures you've posted so far of you eating some sort of ice cream/snow cone treat?" I'm just jealous! It's funny how you've acquired a tender spot in your heart for...TURTLES of all things! Looking back, wayyyyyyyyyyyyy back, I remember having that same affection for...MANATEES!!!! haha! Anyway, I'm slap happy and don't really know why. Everyday looks beautiful in Hawaii and you've managed to make every moment count. Your journey has been jam packed with new experiences. We are all quite envious. Keep enjoying up to the very last minute! I'm almost afraid to ask but have you made your return plans yet? We'll talk soon. I love you. Oh, the video was cute. You should have talked on it : - )

Turtles - From: I Love Turtles
The turtles actually look kind of cute. Do they come near you or are they not too into people? I don't think I would mind them as long as they weren't chasing me. As a child I had nightmares about animals and reptiles chasing me, so maybe that is my fear of animals, reptiles, and fish? Both times we have been on Ohau I have refused to go to the Dole plantation. First, it isn't someplace I'd like to dump money. Second, it seems too touristy to me. I don't think I am going to tell Jay you went as he will surely tell me we are the only ones who haven't gone! I would have gotten some more of that pie at Ted's - there is none of that over here. It is cocktail time here! Cheers!

Harry Potter - From: Finally Made it to Hanauma
So I am also attempting to read the series. I am in book three and assured that they get better the more mature the characters become. Don't get me wrong JK is a fantastic author but I have not become fully engrossed yet. Sounds like you are still having a fantastic time! I am so jealous that you can run outside. It is 114 here and I cannot even stand outside let alone run! Keep enjoying yourself! Lacey

Poor Bill.. - From: Finally Made it to Hanauma
What a trooper heading off to go snorkeling hungover..or even worse, still drunk. On a snorkel trip in Puerto Vallarta - yes, I went on a snorkel trip but didn't snorkel - I got so sea sick, and felt like I was drunk. I expalined this to one of the hottie boat guys. He told me getting in the water with flippers would be very theraputic. He promised to stay with me. It actually worked. Or maybe I forgot about the ill feeling I had because he was so cute? Gosh, your friend Jen sounds like fun. LOL! Glad we got to chat. I am so happy that you have had such a great experience this summer. I wish I could run - for even just a mile! Another exciting event you have to look forward to..and I am sure you will have a great time. And I think you have learned to make the best of your circumstances - you are tolerating the cockroaches, right? Jay loves Kona Beer - he buys it frequently. I wish I liked beer, kind of like the running thing. Beer is so much cheaper than what I like to drink! Happy Wednesday - tomorrow!

Gorgeous... - From: The Cutest Little French Restaurant in Waikiki
I love the pictures of Kewalo Point. I want to go there. Is there some beach there where you can sit??? And The Cream Pot....looks divine! I have been dreaming of crepes for awhile. The closest I have gotted in Mia's French pancakes this morning from LGO - and they aren't the same. Looks yummy. See what the travel guide you have become? I wish I could come over and had hang out with you this week since it is my last week of vacation. You could show me all the really fun non-touristy stuff. Massaging a stranger? hmm...I love getting massages, but I couldn't touch someone who a) smelled, or b) didn't live up to my cleanliness.hygiene expectations. Buy a round trip ticket and go back for fall break! Looks like Terry has some nice views. I want her life. But you are 100% correct. Even if you have to work, where you live contributes so much to your way of life, your attitude. Moving back here from Chi-town, I feel like I live in a resort where I can be outside the majority of the year (except this minute when it is 113, but later tonight, yes). Lifestyle is a choice people make. Don't wish or dream...make plans to do it!

Wild Hair - From: A Haole (foreigner) among locals
Jen, I still have tears streaking down my face. Literally, you made me LOL for two minutes straight when I read the captions under your wind blown hair pictures!!!!!! Guess I was seriously relating as we can both be pretty neurotic about our hair! That was funny. The truth? It did look like Bozo the Clown hair!! ; - ) On another note, way to go, putting yourself in the thick of it with a group of strangers....again! Bravo. I think it is difficult for most people. It is for me, that's for sure. Had the kids yesterday. Took them to "Jump Street" for an experience. It's a giant place where you can jump on huge trampolines. There is an area for 7 and under which after scoping it out is where they both chose to go. On this side there were three enormous jumping things (can't remember what they are called but people rent them for birthday parties), two big tramplines and an area with an assortment of playhouses. That was Naava's favorite. All in all, it was a fun 1 1/2 hours. Only downside, there were so many of those worthless video games all over and they were all coaxing Brady to "come on over". When that happens it sucks some of the fun right out of the moment because I immediately turn into "THE MEANIE!" One game is never enough.....nor is two! So, have fun today. I've already been to Body Pump & WW. Now it's time to hit the shower. Love you! MOM

So weird to read your blog and see pictures of my Carlson buddies - so glad that you have had entertainment. The large rock with the hole in it was at the end of the street where we rented the house for the U2 concert - I really liked that area. Also, the shrimp truck - yummy I could eat there for days. It makes me happy just thinking about it. Good to know that you are enjoying yourself, holding down the fort here and yes, your neighbors have gotten crazier over the summer.

Hot Sand..and Sawyer - From: The North Shore & Ten Must-See's
It is incredible how hot that sand is - almost like walking on the pavement in Phoenix on a day like today( 113 degrees). Maybe you should tell SUSD that you can't come back until a) it cools down, and b) until there are some good airfares, but to keep deposting your check! Personally, I'd go for Sawyer. He has that renegade spirit, with a softer side. I am not so into Jack's whiney side and his almost denial of his many issues. I never watched Party of Five, so I am not a huge fan of Matthew Fox. Josh Holloway reminds me of a Kid Rock. Slighty dirty and a lot of fun. I know my attraction to that surprises many. I have seasons 1 - 3 of Lost now if you want to borrow one of them. Never had the hula pie either. Don't you love the rocking chairs at the Moana? Did you get coffee from next door? I enjoyed sitting at early evening and watching everyone walk by. During the day I was able to see several brides which I love, too! I am so glad you made it to Byodo-In Temple. I knew you'd love it. Oahu is such a diverse island; there is something for every mood your are in. Your blog has essentially planned our next trip. I love that I am not going to have to freakishly research, but just return to this lovely blog. Here is the dessert Jay & I shared tonight from Postino: A hot homeade caramel sundae with chocolate covered corn nuts, a pretzel and something almost like toffee for a mere $5. Delicious. I am on the healthy eating thing, soon. I hope. I really wish I didn't enjoy delicious, beautiful food so much. It is like art for all the senses!

I am thrilled that you feel good, you've made new friends, and who wouldn't be envious of all the R&R you've done this summer! (rest & relaxing, or....rock & rolling...Haha!) Hilton Hawaiian Village - From: Becoming a Beach Bum
Right on sister about HHV. The beach is not nice and even though I didn't go in, I am sure that place is overpriced. That is not my favorite end of Waikiki. Heard that the Hale Koa food is cheap. I don't generally order chicken for your exact experience. I am sorry you had to experience that. I actually don't even like to cook or touch chicken. To me, the chicken is equivalent to the cockroach. But, chicken is a little healthier than red meat, so sometimes I have to cook it or eat it. And beach bum it really okay.....enjoy it!

You brave girl! There is no freaking way I would have jumped! I wouldn't have even considered it. I am really impressed. With your descriptions of food, I need no planning for the next trip nor a menu at the restaurants. The Michael's Scramble sounds delicous, but so do the pancakes though I really like heavy food for breakfast on a regular basis (except the Malted waffles with bruleed bananas and carmel sauce at Over Easy). I love the coconut syrup they have there. I made some Hawaiian Sangria this weekend and though of you. In fact, I am having a glass with my lunch. Rose wine, pineapple juice, guava nectar and I threw in some rum to make it a bit stronger. As a die hard red sangria girl, this one is pretty good. Jay will be in Denver for the next few days, so if you are up and want to talk, call. I am sure I will not sleep much. I now wish I was going as I found a couple yoga people on Twitter wh are in Denver and a distant cousin and his family are there. I could have met up with you mom and I would have been very busy. Another time. I'd really like to check Denver out. So when are you coming home? And I will follow that up with when are you going back? I don't even want to think about what is cming up in the next few weeks. I like this not working gig.

I love Mai Tai's the drink and the Bar. I had a blast the first time I went there. And loved their drinks and food. They have a great happy hour! India - From: Wine, Beer & Tropical Drinks
Did you know that in India, even straight men hold hands while walking down the street? It is a sign of friendship. I think the world would be a happier place if everyone would hold hands. Think about it, blood pressures would drop, people would speak more softly and with love. Anyways, I just learned this fact this week from one of my yoga blogs/books. Never had a lava flow..need to try one. I am so anxious to get over to HI. For the past three years, I have done so much reading, looking at pictures and dreaming. Nothing compares with your blog though. You have gone from desert rat (meaning that in a nice way as I am a desert rat and proud of it) to island girl (I'd take the latter title though)! Yay for island girls! You should go for Spring Break, too. Next time there, I will investigate shave ice. It sounded like a snow cone to me which I am never interested in. I know the clock is tickingso enjoy every minute! I have no doubt you will be headed back to paradise...it is so addicitve and that way of life wants to become a part of you..better than anyplace I have ever been. Hugs to you!

Looks like a great time Jen BUT, being your mom, I didn't like the visual of you strolling home intoxicated at 3 something in the A.M.! Ya, ya, ya, I know you are a big girl now, but mom's will always worry and there are crazy people out there. Just don't want you to come face to face with one......especially when you're compromised by alcohol! Okay, enough with the lecture. Pie... - From: 4th of July & a Hike to Nowhere
My mouth is watering. That looks so delicious. I can almost taste it. It is nothing fancy, but I love that haupia filling. Can you bring an entire pie home? I'd seriously be Fed Exing that pie over here if they'd do it. It was funny that you were surprised that Ted's was a hole. I don't discriminate on food. Good is good and little holes are usually the best. I am so frequently disappointed by the "big" names. Someday I will tell you about J & G at The Phoenician - or you may have read about it on my blog. Which by the way, I stole another picture of yours for my other blog. I think I may have to steal two from here, maybe three. And the sunset in your picture...lovely! Where is Turtle Beach because I am not sure if I have been there? It is on my list for my next trip. You were very persistent with your hiking. I would have said forget it and gone for margaritas. Your Mom's post is cute. She seems really cool. You are lucky! Too bad I am not going to Denver next week, I could call her. I had better try and get to sleep. I need sleping pills during the summer I tell you. Hope you get up to the North Shore again this week!

- From: 4th of July & a Hike to Nowhere
Hi Jen! Just when you think the pictures couldn't be more gorgeous you send some that are! You are a lucky lucky girl! Each day you have all this right out your front door, or pretty close to it. It was great spending some phone time with you yesterday. From your expression in these photos you really look like you are having fun with the people around you. I can't imagine such a "happy go lucky" lifestyle, or maybe I can. I remember being younger than Holly and traveling around the country in a V.W. convertible "Bug" with a particular "someone". It was very hippie style and we just kept going til the money ran out. That's about as close as I can come to what you are doing. You are like a "local" now and could be a great tour guide. Wish I were in the position to fly out and spend a few days with you. It would be a super memory, for sure. I took an Imitrex two hours ago to ward off an impending migraine. This morning I woke up with all the classic symptoms. Tylenol didn't touch it, so I went for the strong stuff before it got out of hand and put me out for a day or so. It worked. My head feels better and maybe I will venture out for my own neighborhood hike around the lake on Jewel. Its very hot out, but should be cooling off soon since it is getting later. I'll write again soon. I love you! Mom P.S. The progress on Weight Watchers is ridiculously SLOW and the picture of the pie made my mouth water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Haha

I heart North Shore! - From: Rooftop, Roomies & Relaxation
Haleiwa Joes is awesome..do go back! I have eaten there too. There is also a DELICIOUS place to eat called Jameson's. It's a little pricer but the food is fabulous. And those surf shops have great finds if you have the time to look through them. North Shore is my favorite part of town lots to see and do up that way. Oh and one of those shops sells those recycled glass necklaces I was telling you about. I also did my shark dive up at North Shore..very close to where you took that picture of the bridge. Well continue enjoying your time. I'm glad to see you branching out past Waikiki there is so much more for you to see yet. So put that bus pass to good work during this last month! You still need to check out the Polynesian Cultural Center too. It's a whole day but very interesting to learn about all of the Pacific Islands.

From Your Cruise Director! - From: Rooftop, Roomies & Relaxation
Hi, it Julie..I mean Jen, your cruise director. Welcome to the Island of Love, the gathering place, where life moves at a slower place than the rest of the world and you are blessed with miles and miles of beaches and will not ever want to return to the mainland. LOL. I think you probably know so much more about the island than I do now, so I think you are the consutlant! Love the pictures from the rooftop. So cool! Even better, I love your pictures from Haleiwa as they remind me of mine. We ate at the Haleiwa Joe's last time - they also have one in Palm Springs if I am not mistaken. I love how you mentioned going to the other side of the island - just like a line from LOST. I am sure your dinner was great. How fun is it to cook with or for people??? Eventually you might find cooking theraputic. I used to not be able to cook anyting, but now can manage my way aroudn the kitchen and can sometimes cook without a recipe. It is a a little hobby - trying to find healthy, delicious meals. When they are not so healthy, I tell myself they are much healthier than if we would have gone out. Anytime you want a cooking buddy here, I will cook with you! Thanks for posting a picture of my bed. That bed is almost better than sex. (I hope no one will take offense to that, but it is close.) They are taking orders at Nordstroms now for thir yearly sale. The are very reasonable in price. Maybe I should market for Nordstoms or the Heavenly Bed line. And speaking of, I am going to go jump into my bed. Your pictures will cause me to dream of my next Oahu vacation!

OMG The Pictures are Gorgeous! - From: She Swims With Turtles
Okay, so do I need to send you a life vest? Please be careful out there! If you meet a riptide, swim parallel to the shore to save your energy.... isn't that the rule? You are so brave. Just be smart. Amazing to swim among such grand creatures. I loved the way you put it when you said you were a part of their world. Three weeks into this adventure and you've found comfort, friends and probably even a side of yourself that only "quiet time" allows you to see more clearly. What is obvious to me in your writing is that you seem to be connecting to your environment. It's a beautiful place to be. An opportunity of a lifetime! How do the TV commercials put it? "Priceless" Hawaii seems to be pulling at your heartstrings. I for one was glad to hear that you are still looking forward to the changes that await you when you come home; new school, new grade to teach, new people to meet......All is good right now for you and that warms my heart. I love you and miss you. MOM

Wow! - From: She Swims With Turtles
Jen, I can't believe how wonderful it all sounds!! I would think that laying on a surfboard in the ocean would scare me more than the giant sea turtles though! You make Hawaii sound like the best dream ever, and I can see why you are going to be sad to go. I tell everyone what you are up to, and now all of my friends are immerssed in your stories. I am very happy that you are eating better meals, I think that will keep you feeling well. Your descriptions of the food always crack me up!! You are a great writer, but I think you made need some entertaining adjectives to describe the food! I keep missing you on facebook, but would love to chat again soon. I can tell you all about my new job. My phone time usually consists of when I am driving to and from work, so I will try you on my way home as I don't think you would appreciate a super early phone call.

snorkeling... - From: She Swims With Turtles
Ah! I'm glad to hear that you got over nerves enough to do some snorkeling and do some amazing things. My friend Courtney has mentioned taking me snorkeling a couple of times now- we haven't made any definite plans yet. The idea of it sounds more intriguing to me than actually doing it; I know that I will probably react the same as you did. Not sure when the ocean started freaking me out as much as it does now....? Glad to hear that it was wonderful though!

Keoni by Keo - We finally ate ther this last trip. On our previous trip, we went there for dinner, were seated, and I wasn't feeling the menu. We ate there on our last night in Oahu. It was really good and reasonbaly priced. The Aqua Bamboo is just a few steps away from there. Love the tiitle - She Swims with Turtles. And maybe, ultimatley, you belong there. We have been discussing a move to CA in the future. Why not? Life is too short. Having said that, I do love AZ, but I think I lvoe the ocean more!

Kailua Beach - That is exactly how I remember it, cool, soft white sand and blue water. We stopped there after going to Waimea Beach (get there, too!) which had blistering hot sand! We had trouble navigating in Kailua, but eventaully found the beach. I'd really like to explore it a little more. The Bus - Think about how fortunate and spoiled we are to have our own cars. Yeah, there are so weirdo's on the bus, but think about how you have lessened your impact o nthe environment and how much money you aren't spending on gas. Running - You are brave girl for doing those Hash runs! I'd be like, "No, Thanks!" So remember to get to Sunset Beach (and go to Ted's), Waimea Beach, and Haleiwa. I think you will be disappointed if you wait until the end of your trip to go. When are you coming home? You are coming home, right? I am waiting to take you to Chelsea's for sangria and to get the scoop on all details of your Hawaii trip! And if you are at all able to, go to Ola's for dinner at Turtle Bay. That is the best meal Jay and I have had in the past year. The setting is perfect. Did you see "Forgetting Sarach Marshall?" It is a little pricey, butworth every penny.

Letting Your Mind Wander - From: The Day Michael Jackson Died
Hi Jen! This entry made me chuckle several times. You do sound as though you've settled in like Liz said and are feeling more "at home". Guess I would have to do some serious clothes shopping before spending any time in Hawaii. All I have are jeans, jeans and more jeans. I'll bet your feet are grateful for the rest from wearing heels! This past weekend was nice. Yesterday Randy & I did 100 miles on the Harley. We began going up Look Out Mountain then headed west to the Central City exit on I70. No gambling this time. Instead we took this amazing scenic route over to Nederlands than headed east through Coal Creek Canyon to pick up Hwy. 93 and head back through Golden. Poor Randy. Even with 50 SPF sunscreen his arms are still red as a lobster. I can't remember if you said you watched the movie Gran Turino with Clint Eastwood, but if you haven't, I know you'd like it. Last night was my second attempt to watch after falling asleep the night before just after the opening credits! It's a good rental. On Saturday night we went to Dave's wedding. Since Randy got back from the car show in Pueblo pretty late and didn't know where his dress clothes were, we found ourselves running on "Laura time". Not a good place to be with Randy! He hates sliding in at the last minute anywhere, but this time he was supposed to escort Larry's Srs. wife Cece, down the aisle. We were 5 minutes out when we got the panic call from Larry Jr. asking where we were. Anyway, we just made it. Alicia's (the bride) family is huge. The Schneiderman side not so huge. Very tiny actually. It was nice to see Dave and Alicia so happy. Today I am scrambling to collect about 15 things our CPA asked for before July 1st! See, I'm at it again and do it so well! PROCRASTINATE! So, before I say goodbye I want to tell you again how very proud I am of you. The way you welcome challenge and change is an example for us all. And by the way, be sure to follow through with your thought about eating more nutritious foods. You don't want to compromise your immune system! Have a great day and I will talk to you soon. You are always in my thought! I love you, MOM

Underwear - From: The Day Michael Jackson Died
LMAO. I hardly ever wear undewear in Hawaii. I'm rarely not in a bathing suit - even to shop! That is so funny. I am glad you said something. And the heels, I couldn't agree more. But the make-up is another story. I am a bit high maintenance that way. Same with the blow dryer and flat iron. I don't feel good on any given day if I haven't showerd and put myself back together (kind of like Humpty Dumpty), even if I am going to get dirty. I would have commented earlier, but I didn't get an update for this post. I subscribe, so I will have to investigate. As for living through you, it is as much, if not more, about the environment, than what you do. I think this is also a journey of personal growth for you and that is inspiring, too! I say you get up to the North Shore, get some pie at Ted's and head over to Sunset Beach. I also think you need to check out Haleiwa. Today I wanted to get on a plane a nd come visit you! I feel like I need to test out the Moana Surfrider bed again. We have the same one, but I am not sure if it feels the same. Don't you think my investigation should warrant a trip? I think I have commented on very entry you have made. Keep it up!!!

Settling IN - From: The Day Michael Jackson Died
Well you are finally sounded settled (to what ever degree that means) and that is a good thing. Reading your adventures and even you lack of adventures make me smile (even if they don't make me comment.) -- I want to know if you have blocked that facebook friend we discussed or at least blocked out of your mind? Speaking of blocking out of your mind -- I think you can do that with the bug deal. I bet your Dad was a better teacher than he thinks on that subject. I'm pretty sure you can do it. been a long week -- 50 more layoffs at work and Grandma Ruth (at the Mcdanilas) passed away. She would have been 100 in one month. So keep blogging and documenting all these adventures so you'll have grandma stories to tell for yourself one day. Hugs and love coming your way from us to you....miss you..........love you..........proud of you..............

No High Heels! - From: The Day Michael Jackson Died
Jen, I cannot believe what I am hearing you say, no high heels. I have never known you to wear anything other than those dreadful things, outside of your running shoes. I think that tells how cool and laid back Hawaii really is. My fried a Hawaii native, always brings weird things back from Hawaii for us to try and I was wondering if you have had the pleasure to try any of these said treats. She suggested that you try spam musubi you can get it at 7/11, li hi mui mango from Elans. She also recommends going to Molokai if you have not been already. It sounds like you are experiencing the local culture and having so much fun! Lacey

Top 5 lists - From: The Day Michael Jackson Died
It was 'High Fidelity', the book by Nicholas Hornby (and the movie) that made everything in life a top 5 list. It's a curious thing the way the mind works, how to evaluate everything in terms of importance rather than just to appreciate them for what they are. We see chaos and want to create order. I think when I am alone that my observation abilities are not distracted by conversations and I notice more of who and what is around me. So it is with you as you wander around Oahu. It's good that you have been able to make friends with a few strangers but it's also good to have some time by yourself to observe others. Sometimes it is better not to hear the sound of your own voice. I think celebrities die when you are home or traveling but when you are home, you are distracted so you probably do not pay close attention but when you are traveling, you seem to remember these things. I remember the hotel room I was in when I found out that John Lennon was shot and killed. Memories are very fickle things. I think if you were to move to Hawaii, you would have to reconcile yourself to dealing with bugs at a higher level. I have always tried to teach you that but I think I haven't done a good job. They are just bugs. I have killed 2 large scorpions this summer, and that takes dealing with bugs to a higher level.

Hey Jen! Another great tale to read about, you certainly are keeping the rest of us entertained...the rest of us who are still stuck in our daily routines, going to work, feeding our families, etc. etc. etc....and as I read this, I wonder whether you really get how amazing it is what you are doing. We are all tuning in daily to see just what new and hopefully wonderful things you are doing and discovering. To get the pics are just an added bonus. And you look GREAT!! All that running certainly looks good on you! And what a fun group the Hash House Harriers are...you should start up a club back in AZ>>>>that is our course if you decide to head back!!!!! Love you......can't wait for the next entry!

Your Running Makes Me Tired! - From: My 1st Hash
Hi Jen!!! Sorry it's taken me so long to jump in, but I am soooo enjoying your escapades! First, the title of this blog really got my attention until I realized it was all just a bunch of (legal) fun. I liked your description of the cute little coffee mugs, but NO, I don't have any cute little painted ones like that at my house (all I have are martini glasses). Was it in this blog or maybe one of the others when you asked your mom if she would still come visit you if you moved to Hawaii? Uh, I'll answer for her with a big yes, yes and a YES....you are living your mommy's dream (and mine, and Aunt Vicki's and Val's, and, well, not Uncle Scott because he is against sand). The last time I was in Hawaii (the only time), I was pregnant with Bryan. I went all that way and didn't even get to see a volcano. It tickles my funny bone to see that picture of your empty table at the Starbucks under an umbrella, because it looks just like the umbrella we have here at our local Starbucks! Did you have to go all that way just for a choca-lacka-mucka-cherry-on-top caramel swirl mochachino Grande?!! Anyway, I am loving your photos, and descriptions and hearing the way you've been putting yourself out there! You must sleep well at night with all that walking and running. I have to laugh when I hear you mention it was only a "forty minute walk" to wherever...considering how much driving around a parking lot most people do, just to avoid walking 10 steps instead of 5!!!! (uh, that would be me). K, well, I think I'll put down "Twilight" and focus more on your blogs, so I can catch up with you. Love u, Ant Jill (the thought of roaches in your room made me think of ants, but oh, if I were only that small)

You Are Amazing! - From: My 1st Hash
Jen, I am practically speechless! My brain can barely comprehend how one person can be having so much fun! My wish for you is that it continues! Sorry it's been a few days since my last comment/or phone conversation. There is just NOTHING to report. It's the same old stuff. I'm trying to brainstorm to figure out how to change things up a bit. So, let's get back to YOU! Specifically, your closing comment on this blog. Would I visit you if you moved there? What kind of question is that? You'd have to have a GUEST ROOM with my name on it! Who wouldn't love to have an excuse to spend time in Hawaii every year? All I want for you is for you to be happy. That's what we all want for you in case it's not obvious. When I read that, my eyes teared up and I had to walk away from the computer momentarily. (And because my shoulders are aching from too many hours of computer work today :-( ) Your summer is one you'll never forget, no matter what it leads you to do. I agree with Janeen. You are the most adventurous and courageous person I know. Right now it is you who is inspiring me. I love that you and Terri have become friends. How the heck does she do all that running? I'd like to think that I could keep up on the hikes you've done, but no way could I run the races! Do they accept fast walkers????????? I'm going to run out to do some errands now, so keep smiling. I'll call soon. I love you! mom

This is the way life should be lived! i dont think that people really know how to enjoy themselves till at least 40 so it doesn't surprise me that the average age is 50. Slamming 2 beers though... i might have passed out from the depth perception problem, changes in elevation, high heart rate and nervousness. Still, it TOTALLY would have been worth it! Great blogs! Bird on Table... - From: 2 Weeks on Island
This is why I cannot eat at Duke's even though I covet their fish tacos. I don't like birds. Birds are very, very dirty animals. Nevertheless, I am glad you enjoyed House Without a Key. That room that you thought was pretty, but weren't sure what it was for - another potential wedding reception location. Always thinking. Congrats on your completed run. I can't run, even after my "surgery." I admire people who run; I have always wanted to! You and Bill look fine. I don't think we saw people dressed up very often.

You pictures are adding to my to-do list! I know exactly where these places are located, but we haven't stopped! So are you thinking of teacher training for yoga once you return? You could get certified and teach yoga full time. It sounds like you are well on your way to that point! I did make it to - and through - my second hot yoga class. Monday will be my third. Did you get to eat something that cost more thn $5? I am hoping so. We went to the Roaring Fork for HH last night (all night during the summer!) and I though of you. Wish I could be your hiking buddy! - From: Spectacular Views
You're right Jen, these pics are gorgeous! Lucky, lucky you. Do you think I could have done that hike without muttering, or at least thinking, "I can"t? How does it compare to the Camelback hike we took last visit? If you make it to Denver before summer's end, I'd love to do the hike at "Hanging Lake". I've seen the sign so many times on I70 just east of Glenwood Springs. Usually I've been with Randy and we both know how much hiking he likes to do! Sandy was here last night and we talked a lot about fitness stuff, biking, Body Pump class, hiking, etc. She volunteered to do it with me sometime. Let's all do it! I mentioned that I was having a BBQ for a pre-Father's Day celeb. Turned out Jeff and Sandy were the only ones to come. Nikki remembered after I completed all of my food shopping (really no big deal Nikki :-) ) that she had made previous plans to have friends over to her house for dinner. We all sat at the kitchen table (a very unusual event!) since it was chilly and rainy outside. All in all the evening went well and there was much to talk about. This morning Brady asked Randy to pick him up in his Mustang and take him to the annual car show event in Arvada at the rec center. I will follow and pick up Nik and Nav (hey, cute little nick-names...) and join them for awhile. Afterwards Randy will meet Jeff and do a motorcycle ride while I get some exercise in and maybe walk around the lake at Clement Park a few times. Right now the sun is shining bright and the sky is clear and blue. Looks like a good day! You have a good day too and oh, BTW Eat some REAL food once in awhile. You are looking pretty SKINNY! Where is the protein? Oh yeah, you're eating peanut butter. Okay, but how about some FISH! Really Jen, be nice to your body! You are burning lots of calories, so don't forget to fuel up! Just wondering.... - From: Pearl Harbor
Hi Jen! It's been a few days so I thought I'd say HI and check in. Not much new and exciting here. Yesterday was my day with the kids. They voted on going to the "Rainbow Pool" (better known as Weaver Hollow) over the beach (okay, it's not really a BEACH, is it?) at Bear Creek Lake Park. We played there for 3 hours or so before heading home for a very late lunch. Hanging with Brady and Naava is usually good for quite a few laughs as you know. How was your yesterday? After reading your experience at Pearl Harbor I found myself looking back on ours. Neither Randy or I remembered taking a boat over to the memorial. Wierd. Tomorrow I'm planning a BBQ for Father's Day. I asked Randy to extend an invitation to his kids, all 3...so we shall see. It would be nice if all showed up and still nicer if we all had a good time! Nikki will be here with the kids. So, catch us up when you can. BTW, Holly was right, I was a bit concerned about you hiking unknown trails alone, but surprisingly not as freaked out as Holly may have thought! (No doubt, that scary episode that happened so long ago scarred me for life!) For now Jen, I hope you are growing in a positive direction everyday. Know I'm thinking of you and oh so proud of you. Hey, so I just picked up your copy of Twilight from Mom, and I am so excited to read it! As for wanting light reading, I am telling you...HARRY POTTER! I hope that you are having a great time just like it sounds! When do you have to come back to start school? I have been telling everyone about your amazing adventures, and we are all so jealous! It's crazy to be here with you in Hawaii and Holly now in San Diego...Andrew says not to get any ideas : ) The title of your new book peaked my interest, I may have to check it out after Twilight. I have been trying to read the Hobbit for months now, and just can't get into it, but Twilight has grabbed my attention, and I am just happy to have something to read as I blow dry my hair again! (Sad, it's really the only time I have to read) I hope that you make it up to Denver sometime when you come back, we really miss you around here, and Naava tells me that she talked to you on the phone whenever she hears your name. I also bet you are working on an amazing tan!!! Love You!!

Smelled - From: Pearl Harbor
Jen, I am so happy you went into the Surfirder to catch a whiff of that scent. It is lovely. I have lotion with that scent and soap. It reminds me of our trip. Yes, you should stay there sometime, or better yet, have your wedding there! Do you see how I am always planning for other people's weddings? I haven't been to a wedding in so long! When we stayed, we saw many brides coming in for photos, but I am not sure if they were being married there. When you stay at the Surfrider, you will want the bed. It might be cheaper to test out the Heavenly Bed at the Westin Kierland during the summer. Everyone should sleep on that bed. Pure bliss. Jay would sit in the rockers on the porch drinking coffee from whatever the place attached to the Surfrider was every night while he waited for me to get ready. Btw, that coffee kills Starbucks coffee. I love Kona coffee. I have already added the Aloha Stadium swap meet to my to-do list for my next trip. And that St. Louis Heights hike - want to do that as well. Who needs Fodor's or Frommer's when they have you?

Bus it up! - From: New hike, new sights, new roommate, new opportunities…
Glad to see you listened about using the bus. Like I said you can travel that whole island on a dollar if you wanted. So don't be afraid to head up north and see what's up there. It's the locals side..so much different that the tourist side. Plus Jack Johnson lives up North so that's all the reason to go. :)

Although I had heard many good things about Water for Elephants - it did not impress me. Good Luck. I am really liking The Pillars of the Earth, so it would be good for the summer (800 pages). I say have a drink first and see if you want to work with the staff, it can be like a two way interview.

I wake up this morning around six debating whether to go to the gym today. I decide that this will be my day to skip, but then I go open your blog and see that you have been hiking. I was inspired. Really, what else was am I going to do all day until yoga tonight?? Thanks, Jen! So I am beginning to wonder if you will want to come home??? It really sounds like you are having a great time and are becoming more comfortable just being with yourself. That is awesome! I think that after this experience you will find that this can transfer over in to your everyday life back here in the desert. I often prefer doing things alone, as much as I love being around people. Doing things alone provides a bit more clarity. Absolutely love the pictures of the hike, I am wondering if this area is on the way to Valley of the Temples (where that cool temple is) because the view looks so familiar. Good to know the Kahala Mall isn't all that so I won't waste my time. What about the Ala Moana Center? I have skipped that on both of my trips there, but it sounds pretty nice. Enjoy your day...soak up that glorious tropical sun!

OMG Jen, you are so lucky to be doing what you are doing! It does sound like you are adjusting to the adventure with each day bringing new surprises. I am in "crunch mode" at the moment. Have to see the CPA at 1:00 and being the procrasinator you know me to be, I have much work to do before leaving the house. I'll write more later but you have put a smile on my face this morning. BTW, you look great!!!!!!!! I love you! :-) Mom

kitchen comments - From: Boring Days...Read at own Risk
I think your summer kitchen strangely resembles our current kitchen which is truely retro or another way of saying outdated. You should feel at home in it, as I hope you do in ours. Guess you were ready for a break and now back at it... hope the hike was good and don't forget about the bike.....have fun - keep blogging

Kind of strange...I thought my friends and family were the only ones that read this :-) but no I don't remember their names, sorry. They were really friendly. Do you do yoga there? It's a great place. I'm really impressed.

What you are missing out on.... - From: Boring Days...Read at own Risk
So while you enjoy the PEACE and QUIET of Hawaii, I on the other hand have staged a battle against our jobless, lazy ass neighbor. I came home early today from work and all I heard was BOOM BOOM BOOM from his video games. So for the last hour I have had my music BLARING. With the bass at full blast. I am so tired of him. All weekend while him mom was gone he pulled this crap. So as quiet as your days are enjoy them..because if you were home you would have to listen to that nonsense. I'd trade places with you in a heart beat! :)

First, you have a new blog fan in me - I really enjoy reading about your "adventures" in Hawaii. :) I just happened to stumble on your blog when I was looking for more info on Diamond Head Yoga. Do you happen to remember the names of the firefighters you met at the studio? Just curious - I might know them. It's a small world...

Not so bad - From: Boring Days...Read at own Risk
I was expecting worse! Two private yoga lessons- thats freaking awesome! And I also actually enjoy that kitchen- but I'm a crazy retro freak. Haha- I'm totally excited that you are reading that book, can't wait to hear what you think. Dad and I have argued about it- I love it, he hates it, but whatever! The length alone sure makes it a good summer book. Now I've got to find myself one. Hit me up with some suggestions- and NO TWILIGHT! :)

I kind of like the kitchen. I wouldn't do mine that way today, but back in the day that kitchen was probably really cool. It still looks cool - very retro and festive. I like anything festive.

Being bored.. - From: Boring Days...Read at own Risk
I wish I was bored in Hawaii! I am bored in Arizona, which isn't such a bad place to be, but I sure wish I had a beach nearby! Being bored is okay. You have to conserve your energy for all the fun things that you are doing this summer. You don't want to come home in August and collapse and not be able to rush back to teaching, do you? Okay, maybe not rush back to teaching. That is so cool you had a private yoga and Pilates lesson! Let me know how the snorkleing is at the place you mentioned. I hear that place is great. I am totally not a snorkler. I don't really care for the fish - kind of the way your are with the cockroaches. And Pearl Harbor is awesome. Did I tell you I didn't want to go because I saw it on the Brady Bunch? It was way better than Mike Brady portrayed it.

You sure keep yourself busy but make sure you eat enough or you'll get sick and you don't want to waste one moment being sick on this fabulous vacation. I'm so happy to see you are meeting lots of running buddies. Melanie said she'll have Doug call you if he's around your parts. If he calls, you'll know why. All the pictures you're posting are beautiful but I hope to see more of you and some cute boys. Miss you lots and look forward to your future posts.

Hi Jen, I agree with Liz! Invest in that bike!!! You could always put it back on Ebay before you leave there. And maybe you need to pick up a bus schedule too! Hope you are feeling better....maybe all this money saving and not eating is effecting your health, considering all the activity you are doing maybe you should invest in some protein bars. By the way, love the pictures, I feel like i'm on vacation with you!

Silence - From: Silence
So I just read an article in Yoga Journal about a woman who devotes a day - can't remember if it is each month or each week - to silence. Your post reminded me of it. I am happy to hear you silent day ended with conversation, and my favorite, shots of Patron! I love the Moana Surfrider, mostly because we have the Heavenly Bed at home. Sleeping at the Surfrider, or any Westin hotel, doesn't make home seem so far away. But, did you get a scent of the lobby in the Moana Surfrider. If not, go back and smell. I think it is white tea. I love it. Many Westin products, the bed aan the scent, are sold at Nordstroms. Also, a little side note. If you feel the need to use a gym, the Moana Surfrider's gym doesn't require key access - at least it didn't when we were there. Jay said that if we don't stay there the next time, he is planning on using that gym as he is hoping they don't quite figure out it is not smart to not require key access. I am sure they'd be very happy to hear that Jay will use their gym if possible, guest or not. Anyway, the gym it just past the spa at the Moana Surfrider, in case you want to check it out. It is small, but clean. You overlook the main drag while working out. It doesn't make the treadmill quite so boring. You seem to overcome any challenges you face, like bugs and silence, so you are well on your way to a great summer. P.S. We went to The Fish Market tonight. We wish we would have hit Chelsea's. I want to try the fish tacos! Next time.

Hey Jenny!!! COCKAROACHES????? EEWWWW :) jk lol Well, it least it will help u get over your fear. :) The hike looked SO pretty...why didnt I get to go??? No, no jk. I'm more of a Montana person anyway :D Well, a funny story for you is that Molly is house-sitting for people WAY up in North Scottsdale. When she opened the toilet a SCORPION was inside!!! A small one too! How scary! In a hurry, sho closed the lid, flushed, shut the door, and hid under the bed covers. Oh yah, she also texted my mom. It was a pretty funny conversation :) Now she is wearing shoes everywhere in that house. :) Just wanted to update you. Hope it goes better soon! <3 Ellie

Hello "Yes Girl" - From: The Yes Girl
I don't know who Christine is, but I like her. It is way more fun to be the yes girl, than the no girl. You will have more interesting experiences to share. No girls are very boring if you ask me. Great pictures. I have some very similar. I agree, Camelback if tougher. Oddly, I have never made it to the top of Camelback I just don't know where it ends. I have been up really far, but it seems never-ending. I am a cautious hiker, which Jay translates to I am chicken sh** and don't want to fall or sprain or break anything. One of these days I am going to get to the top of that mountain, wherever it is. Can't wait to read the next blog entry. Happy running tonight!

Thinking of you over coffee - From: Settling in to the Aloha spirit
Good morning! I just topped off my coffee, put down my book, New Moon, to check my mail and say hello. Curious to know how your day went yesterday. Mine was filled with the sound of the Wii; Brady's favorite game is Speed Racer and I'm telling you, he can play that thing for hours. It's a great distraction when its pouring outside, but I have to pry his little fingers off the remote to get him into the fresh air when it stops. Maybe a bit of an exaggeration for today he went willingly when I suggested throwing a ball around. Lately, we've been playing catch in the cul-de-sac or raquetball off the garage door while Naava takes her nap. He has quite an arm and is accuracy is amazing! So now I'm off to the gym and then hope to catch up on my paperwork and maybe even make some sense out of my office. Sadly, it has slipped back into the condition you are used to seeing it. Makes me crazy! I just know I'd be a lot more comfy in an organized space. I'll check in later to see if you've written more. If not, I'll give you a call. Love, Love, Love, MOM : - )

On you way.. - From: Settling in to the Aloha spirit
Jen, It sounds like you are well on your way to meeting people! I am so happy you fond a yoga studio. And thanks for the post about food. The problem with HI is that is is so expensive. People need to know if there are good places to eat that are worth going back to. You did a great job sharing about your sushi. All I need is the name of a restaurant and if you mention the name, I am assuming you'd go back to the place. And bravo to the poster above for mentioning House Without A Key. I have a list of ten cheap place to eat in HI from the AZ Republic. I will email you a few places. You need to eat with all that working out you are doing. You pictures are fantastic. As I sit here, I am now dreaming about a trip to HI. I better get busy on my non-exciting day since I don't get to go to the beach. A trip to school, cleaning, and Matt is having a friend stay the night. I guess I'd better stock up on some more wine for this sleep over - for me, not for them. The highlight of my day will be my Starbucks run for the Vivanno. Have you tried those?? Yum...and it is fairly healthy, too! Happy beach day! -Jen

What Awesome Views! - From: Settling in to the Aloha spirit
Hi Jen! Just got home from my workout and I can tell you that my views are nothing like yours! OMG! The sky, the water, the foliage...all so beautiful! Remind yourself everyday that you are doing something amazing. How could you not "grow" from this experience? Sounds like you are being very resourceful and filling your days with things to do. I thank all of you out there that are giving Jen suggestions! It was good to talk to you yesterday and I was relieved, of course, to hear the "upbeat attitude" in your voice (I really don't think it was just for me). I'll check in later Jen. Um Yeah - From: Settling in to the Aloha spirit
You did come off as really depressed as in I think it is time to hide the knives kind of depressed. It was probably just the stress of traveling and the underwhelming accommodations and I suppose fresh air, bright sun and ocean water and beaches will help. A bike to get around seems like a very good idea.

eat, pray, love - in Oahu! - From: Here I Am Honolulu!
Did you read the book "eat, pray, love"? If not, go get it and read it. Part of her trip reminds me of the conditions of your "sleeping quarters" as I am going to refer to it. So it isn't quite what you were hoping for. We teach, so we deal with many unpleasant conditions, often for nine months at a time. The sleeping quarters are temporary - a mere two months. Look at your other pictures. Gorgeous! I bet you are there more for the outside beauty than sitting in any house, no matter how cool. I am sitting in the house and I'd rather be hanging out on the beach or hiking Diamond Head. Check out Coco Cave on the main drag in Waikiki. (I will email you a picture.) It is like the ABC Store, but better. They have a deli, so to speak, with some yummy food...not just sandwiches. There is sushi and other types of food as well as some delicious looking desserts. In a town where reasonably priced food is hard to find, this place is a bargain. It is just down from the Moana Surfrider on the other side of the street by some restaurant called Atlantis. Also, in the International Market Place is Hank's Haute Hotdogs. We didn't try it, but I read some good things about it. Another place to try at Happy Hour time is Indigo in Honolulu. We went for lunch and OMG - divine. You can't find food like that here. But the waitress said the vibe is really good and a great crowd at HH and later in the evening. There is also a wine bar that I wanted to make it to, but didn't so I will put that in my next comment on your blog - once I find the name! I can be your official food and drink guide. Post any place you go to that you think is really good both food/drink wise & price wise since my knowledge is minimal. You can be a reference to many. Hang in there, Jen! I think the payoff and the experience will be worth it. If you left now, how would you be able to meet all those island boys? Married me needs to live vicariously through you! Soak in some of that sun for me! Don't forget the sunscreen! Hugs from the desert to you on the beach!

Here's to you! - From: Here I Am Honolulu!
Morning Jen! What a great first blog....and I love the pictures that help us visualize the story. It's hard when our expectations don't meet with reality but they hardly ever do. Give yourself a bit of time to adjust to your new surroundings, and remember, this is not your reality. This is a summer adventure for you.....time goes by quickly so stay in the moment and remember why you wanted to do this in the first place. And if you don't last for the whole summer, so what! Anyway, I know that as you get more comfortable, you will begin to let yourself enjoy the beauty of your surroundings....excluding the place you are living in! Probably not much different than a college dorm! I look forward to hearing more about your daily activities. And by the way, you're a great writer! Hope you have a few good summer reads. Love you brave adventerous girl! Val
