June 12 At 7am I woke up to movement upstairs. It was Bill’s voice - Yes! It was the first time I’d heard him since the day I got here, so I wasted no time. I ran upstairs to say hi. We talked for a few minutes and I even got him to remove the cockroach from the basement. On a side note I also mentioned to him these little dead bugs that had reappeared on the countertop downstairs. A few days earlier I had seen them, but the next day they were gone. It freaked me out, but sometimes I’d rather not even know the truth. But here they were again. So he told me that they die each night and then the geckos come in and eat them. Geckos - great. Honestly I don’t mind lizards much; in fact I’d prefer them 100-1 over a cockroach. Sure enough right after he left I saw it, or them. Whatever…at least they eat the bad things.
I also met Sami this morning. She’s an MBA international student living here from Taiwan. She was super nice. I’m glad I finally went upstairs.

There's a live webcam that looks down on it...if you ever want to say Hi online day I made my way down to the main strip of shopping in Waikiki. I walked around for hours, stopped in the international marketplace, but shopping isn’t so fun when you’re not buying anything, so I went to the beach instead. I really like the Moana Surfrider; Jen - you’re so lucky you stayed there! That’s the part of the beach that I’ve been hanging out on. It makes me wish I was staying in a hotel instead of over a mile down the road.
After a little while, I couldn’t stand the heat any longer. The sun feels just as intense and hot as it does in AZ. So I began making my way back home to change into running clothes and go meet the 5:30 running group I found online. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find them, so I had to go on my own run.
I ran down the main street of Waikiki (again) all the way to the end. Along the way I found a Niketown store that had group runs every Wed/Sat. I found out about a 9am run the next morning which I was excited about. From there I ran to the Ala Moana
mall, then began to double back down the beach. Jeaneen recommended seeing the sunset from Waikiki beach, and there are fireworks every Friday night too, but I was exhausted. I walked along the beach slow enough to see the sunset which was very beautiful, but skipped the fireworks. By the time I got home, it was 8pm and as badly as I wanted to go check email and blog, I couldn’t do it. I decided it would be a good night for ramen.
At this point, I realized that I was kind of down because my entire day was silent. Actually, the best part was my 30 minute phone conversation with my mom, but in person- I hadn’t spoken to one person all day and it had taken its toll on me.
Then Bill came home. He invited me out with a few friends from work; they were meeting a bar called Lulu’s down the street. Yes!!! I couldn’t believe it. My silent day would be silent no longer. I was so excited, that I didn’t even mind walking for the 3rd time in the day all the way back to the beach!
A reggae band was playing
Me & Bill
Here's one of my roommates! at the bar and I met his friends Kristi and Joe from work and one of their friends, Alex. I was in heaven. People, conversation, shots of Patron, and beer…and really good beer by the way. It was Maui Brewery’s Coconut Porter - delicious.
By the time it was 1am and Bill and I were walking back home, I had made a new girl friend to hike with, gotten to know my roommate better, and had my first night out at the bar. A great ending to a silent day!
