Some Serious Gun
My head is above average in size, otherwise a head could fit in there. North Redington Beach is great and all but we had to move on and get away as the crowd there was getting old and unpleasant to look at. Every online guide said that Fort DeSoto Park has the best beaches, so down we went for a looksy. Getting there is easier said than done, which is part of the appeal and keeps all of the tourists away, plus since it is a State Park there is no concrete. Furthermore, we checked into our little Bed and Breakfast in Gulfport today, which is a historical town which maintains turn of the Century feel in what is now an overbuilt Tampa Bay area. I chose this place because there is a beach but the Gulfport Beach is no good, bunch of brackish backwater.
Fort DeSoto Beach
Fort DeSoto Park sits at the mouth to Tampa Bay and is so named because of the fact that a fort sits at this strategic location. Unfortunately it was getting quite cold today so we were not able to hit the beach, only walk around what is clearly a beautiful place to hang out when warmer. My recommendation is to go toward the fort and then
Howitzers
Okay, she's done. go all the way to the northern tip of the island, it is the most popular area but is so for a reason, it is very nice. There are nice picnic areas and a huge area with sand dunes all over.
The Fort
All was not lost as we got to visit the fort but we froze our tails off in the wind. The fort was built around the Civil War or something like that and has a very interesting history which is all explained in the small museum areas they have in the old rooms of the fort. The fort never saw action. In any event we had some fun monkeying around on the guns.
