Well, here we are again, starting another great (I hope) vacation. This year we are taking an 11-day tour in India with Intrepid Travel. We leave Pensacola Sunday morning (actually, I am writing this at the airport), with our first leg to Houston. Next, we fly to Newark International for our final flight to New Delhi. This is going to be a real experience before we even get to India, since the flight from Newark leaves at 8:30pm Sunday and doesn’t arrive in New Delhi until 9:30pm Monday. Yep, 25 hours! 11 hours of time zone changes and a grueling 14 hour flight. I’ll let you know in my next post how it went, but I am prepared, I think, having bought a rather expensive travel pillow so I can hopefully sleep a good part of that 14 hour flight.
When we arrive in New Delhi, and get our e-Tourist Visas, we have an airport transfer already arranged and paid for to take us to our first hotel, Hotel Perfect, where we will have our tour meeting Tuesday evening. Not sure what we will do between 10:30pm or so Monday and the 6pm meeting Tuesday, but I guess you’ll find out in that blog. Even though this is an organized tour with 8 other travelers, I still have all my normal information for each place we are visiting, including sights, restaurants, and shopping. That way we can make the most of our free time before and during the tour. Wednesday morning our guide will take us all on a short tour of Old and New Delhi, then we board a train for an overnight trip to Varanasi. That should be a real experience too! We’ll spend a couple days in Varanasi with a tour of the city and a morning boat ride. I also hope to take a separate tour of the ancient town of Saranath.
After Varanasi, we take another overnight train to Agra where we will of course have a tour of the Taj Mahal! The next day, we take a 5-hour public bus and a 3-hour Jeep ride to the next stop at Tordi Garh Palace where we spend the night in an actual palace. The following morning we take a 3-hour jeep ride to the town of Jaipur on the edge of the desert. This is where I hope to go on a separate tour to an elephant camp where they’ll teach me how to communicate with them, feed them, and bath them. I just love elephants, and we will be there on my 64
th birthday, so... After a couple of days in Jaipur, we return by public bus to New Delhi for our final day and farewell dinner. We leave New Delhi Friday night and will be back in Pensacola Saturday evening.
I hope you all enjoy sharing our trip with us. I’ll try to post interesting photos, that my wife will be taking with her new camera, and I’ll try to keep the story interesting yet informative. See you next in exotic India!
