Blog 2-22 and 2-23
We were very lay back Tues 22rd, had coffee then went to check out the manatees and much to our surprise we saw 5 off the end dock. They didn’t come into the channel to the spring but they just hung out for quite a while. The vultures were extra bold and were entirely too close for our comfort. Don’t hold still too long! They are standing in the trees with their wings spread out, maybe trying to get all the sun they can as it is a little cool this morning.
In the afternoon we went for a walk on the north trail and were very surprised by a family of wild pigs. There were black ones and red ones all squealing for their lives about 7 of them. It turned out to be just the kids, we didn’t see mom or dad thank goodness as they are very large and can be dangerous, especially protecting their young. Oscar went absolutely bonkers, if he got off the leash he’d still be running.
Then a little farther down the trail we saw a piliated woodpecker. They are the size of a chicken
with a red head and black body, very handsome creatures. The woods are comprised of oaks, magnolia, pines and holly and the undergrowth is the saw tooth palm.
It rained this afternoon so we watched a movie on the computer.
We had bison burgers and brussel sprouts for dinner, while it rained outside.
Wed morning the 23rd we got up, showered, then had coffee while we packed up camp to move on to our next location. Since it rained overnight I had to wipe the hose and electric cord off, they were covered in sand. We are heading for St Andrew’s State Park which is up on the pan handle very close to Panama City. It is cloudy, not raining but the temp is warm with high humidity. We were on the road by 9:50 heading north on 98.
It turned out to be a 5 hr drive a good part of it going west on 98 along the gulf. Very pretty part, sometimes there was water on both sides of the road. We stopped at a local place for lunch, I had a pork bar-b-q and Dee had grilled shrimp. There were little
pigs all over the place.
Lots of traffic toward the end of our trip which made it hard because I was tired. We got to the park at 4:30 and couldn’t find our campsite so we left the park and went shopping for groceries, just a mile or so away. When we got back to the park we were heading in the correct direction so there were signs directing us, we had done the loop backwards. Our site #32 is right on the grand canal and we had a path to our own private beach. It was narrow but it was ours. It was cocktail hour so the chairs went to the beach along with our little table. Well Oscar thought he died and went to heaven. After being cooped up in the “box” all day he got to dig in the sand, and he did it with gusto! Nothing was safe, he had sand flying in every direction. When he started ripping out the grass with his mouth I had to call a halt. By that time it was getting dark and chilly so we headed for the camper and put our dinner together. Rotisserie chicken and fresh
green beans, yum! I found an internet connection, very week, from someone else and hopped on for a short time. I could get e mail but not able to do the blog, too slow. I’ll try tomorrow.
St Andrew’s is a beautiful park with one side on the grand canal and the other on the gulf. Tomorrow we will hike to the gulf to check out the beaches, weather permitting.
