First thing in the morning we headed out for a wave runner tour, where we were sharing jet skis (I was sharing with Zoe!). After the very basic instructions on how to drive and steer the jet skis and filled up with plenty of fuel, at our own pump station, we soon headed out to the open waters to wiggle our ways along the coast and slightly out to sea and finally reach a spot for some dolphin spotting and also to swim in the Gulf of Mexico.
It was the first time I’ve ever been on a jet ski, and was very mindful of Zoe on the back. I tried not to go too fast, thinking Zoe could fall off. Turns out I was too mindful and not quick enough to keep up with the others. Seems we were like a married couple, as Zoe thought I was useless at the controls. She quickly swapped with me, and it really was an effort to hold on. All there is is a small notch or handle to hold onto, and that’s it, as we rode the waves, throwing us in the air everytime.
I was a little thankful when we stopped at the dolphin spotting. Some of the others abandoned their jet skis and jumped in the water, but I didn't feel brave enough, so allowed Zoe the chance to, whilst I tried my hand at some real jet skiing! Not before having a dolphin swim right passed me and Zoe. That was a pretty awesome experience.
After 15 minutes or so, we all mount up again, Zoe taking the controls again, and we headed a little further along the coast to a small out of the way beach. We parked up, and walked across the small peninsula and had a dip in the Gulf of Mexico, which means that’s now 2 different oceans I had been in on the trip.
Fortunately on the way back, Zoe took up Todd’s offer to share his ski, allowing me to ride solo. So I ‘floored’ the jet ski all the way back, which felt pretty awesome to do so as I bounced off wave after wave.
The only problem was, after I took off my life vest, it was clear I hadn’t put on any sun tan lotion before hand, as my shoulders and exposed skin had gone very red and sore. After collecting our group photo on the skis, we headed back to camp for a free afternoon.
After catching the South Africa vs Uruguay game with G, Mark, Scott and Todd, I had a very cold shower and slapped lots of after sun on in an attempt to reduce the burns. I even thought about jumping into the pool later, but kids were in it all day, so felt I shouldn't.
In the evening some of us decided to head to the beach across the road, but only made it as far as wading in up to our knees, before standing around and watching a nearby storm head towards land a little further up the coast. We soon headed back and got ready for our journey tomorrow to New Orleans, or as the locals say, Nawlins!
